January 22nd, 1987
This current Memorial Day period has been especially moving for our Family as we approach the one- year anniversary of our Father’s passing. Stanley Moerner Grote passed away on June 7th 2019 at the wonderful age of ninety-two years. The first anniversary of that date will be here very soon.

To the class of 2020...this is definitely not the graduation that we have always pictured; however, because we have grown up in the community of Mason, we have plenty of memories that can make up for this. Most kids don’t have the chance to grow up in a town like this.
Thank you all for gathering tonight to celebrate my classmates and I, especially under the circumstances that we are in. I think I can speak for every one of my classmates by saying that we would not be wearing these gowns and riding in this parade if it weren’t for every single one of you all’s support.
Mason County Farm Bureau joins Texas Farm Bureau (TFB) to assist those in need of food, as well as those who provide that food, in an effort to keep local businesses alive in these unprecedented times.
Mason County Farm Bureau President Will Frey said, “the Farm Bureau Feeding Texas Co-op Contribution Program, established by TFB, aims to pair food banks and other food-relief entities with local businesses.”
County Farm Bureaus across the state are working with local entities to he ...
The tax revenue that would be generated by changing Mason County from a “dry county” to a “wet county” is substantial. That’s why there is a petition circulating to make Mason County a “wet county” with legalized alcohol sales. Much of the economic development happening all across the Texas Hill Country is directly related to tourism and food and wine culture, and alcohol sales are a big part of that.
Studies show that counties that go from “dry” to “wet” not only incr ...
Adding the recent protests and riots for racial equality to the confusion of the Covid-19 epidemic and the economic uncertainty, seems to be more issues than the news or most any one of us can comprehend. I am just very pleased that we live in our fairly quiet corner of the Hill Country where the economy seems to be picking up with every visitor walking around the square, and the Covid virus has not infected any of our neighbors in more than two weeks and we pray that might be the case for mu ...
The Mason Tennis Association regretfully but respectfully announces the cancellation of this year’s Mason Dr. Pepper Open set for the 3rd weekend in July. We did not come to this decision lightly. We so wanted to showcase the many improvements to our tennis facility to our competitors who come from all across the state.
Come celebrate social distancing with your friends at the 11th annual Melvin Burns Scholarship Golf Tournament on June 13th and 14th at the Comanche Creek Golf Course.
It is a 2-day, 2-man, low ball tournament (Saturday/Sunday). And, a 1-day, 3-man scramble tournament on Saturday. Entry fee for the 2-day is $100 per person.

In recognition of Memorial Day, the Hill Country Cattlewomen held a contest for $100 beef gift cards to honor those who have served. The HCCW received many great stories of deserving individuals and families who have or are currently serving along with their delicious beef recipes. While all the recipes we received were delicious, the winning one may be remembered fondly, or not so fondly, by many veterans as S.O.S.

How Quickly People Get Out of Control and Angry!
Last week, the country got angry. People got angry at the death of George Floyd. Protests turned into riots, because people got even angrier. Then people got angry at the riots, and they raised their voices trying to drown out the protesters, even though those hadn't been the people shouting.
Speaking Up
It seems the same question, phrased multiple ways, is floating around Mason – Why bring controversy to my nice little town? The simple answer is Mason isn’t a bubble.
With TV as my window to the world, I grew up in the sixties watching US citizens demand their equal rights.
Just, Wow!
Today in Mason, Texas, population 2,100+, I was part of a protest. I and a surprising number of my friends and neighbors. We had signs. We had enthusiasm. And most importantly, we had right on our side.
We held our signs asking for Peace. Justice. Mercy. For people to just Care.
Speaking Out
Gerry,
Popovich again pops off to the national media forum with his personal views of our sitting President.
Popovich assumes that, because he has some success in coaching a sport, his opinion matters nationally. As Coach Jackson assessed Popovich with the label of being a simulator—pretending to be an authority about NBA basketball without having played NBA basketball—Popovich is pretending to be a political authority without having participated in politics.
When Pop ...
"Don't squat with your spurs on."
''Never ask a rancher the size of his spread."
These bits of advice regarding the ranching life are fairly well known. However, there are lots of other lesser known observations. As one who has had a life long relationship with ranching, I have become a collector of such, as well as coming up with some of my own.
Behold, the Onion…
Describing the onion as a “lowly vegetable” didn’t set well with the late Othal Brand, for 20 years the McAllen, TX, mayor who cleared many hurdles during his 90-year earthly pilgrimage.
His beloved Rio Grande Valley is now a world center for vegetables in general and for onions in particular.
Ever restless and ever persuasive, Brand often lacked patience, his shirt sleeves already rolled halfway up to take on whoever or whatever stood in the way….

No Knead, Buttermilk, Pull-Apart Rolls
courtesy: Alexandra Stafford
The creation of these rolls requires a bit more work and time than I prefer, but be forewarned: if you make these lovely rolls, you’ll never be allowed to serve any others! The family will be most unhappy with you if you try to run in another kind of bread on them.
The library will be open this week from 10-4 and curbside service will run from 10-6. Our first virtual summer program Pint Size Polkas will be on YouTube until June 11, so if you haven’t had a chance yet, be sure to click the link on our Facebook page to watch.
