Mason ISD is off to a great start to the 2020-21 school year! Students are getting back into their normal routines and learning continues to be our focus. It has been such a joy to see the smiles in the eyes of our students as they walk the halls again at the elementary, junior high, and high school campuses. We knew going into this school year that we would have challenges that we have never had before.
During the Mason/San Saba football game on September 11th, Fellowship of Christian Athlete Huddles from both schools will be competing in a friendly fund raising challenge. Each School will be taking donations at the gate during the first half of the game. The school who raises the most money, wins the challenge. After the game, each team will meet on the field to pray together and the winner will be awarded a plaque to signify the win.
It seems as though things are getting somewhat back to “normal” with School back in session, Football on Friday nights, and not many rain chances in the forecast. By the time this newspaper gets printed and distributed the City’s paving projects will mostly be done, so I hope that you were aware of them ahead of time and planned accordingly.
The Mason High School varsity football team opened its 2020 season at home on Friday, Aug. 28 at the Puncherdome against Comanche High School. Despite an outstanding effort by the Punchers’ defense to keep the Indians’ offense blanketed for a majority of the game, the Mason offense was unable to get things going in a 14-0 loss to Comanche. Outside of a 26-yard touchdown pass on third down from Comanche quarterback Hudson Welch to wide receiver Bryce Hermesmeyer midway through the firs ...

Fredericksburg, TX (8/14/20)— Hill Country Memorial today announced Jayne Pope, Chief Executive Office was inducted into the Huron | Studer Group 2020 Fire Starter Hall of Fame. The award was presented during the 18th annual What’s Right in Health Care® virtual conference, Aug. 11-12, 2020. “Jayne exemplifies what it means to be a healthcare hero,” said Debbie Ritchie, president of Huron’s Studer Group business.
Hill Country Memorial has been recognized as one of the “best maternity hospitals in the U.S.,” according to Becker’s Hospital Review, receiving Five-Star Ratings for its birthing and delivery care. HCM was one of only eight in Texas on Newsweek’s annual list of best maternity hospitals, that includes 231 hospitals across 36 states.
This pretty kitty might have more of a pep to her step if she knew someone who wanted to give her a forever home! Lily is about 5 years old, spayed and fully vaccinated. Lily appreciates a nice meal and a good brushing! She is on the lazy side of the spectrum, but can kick it into gear every now and then!

Summer is hopefully going out with a bang. The heat has been oppressive. The hurricane did not bring us a shower. There are only three weeks until fall and everyone is looking forward to a break in this heat and drought. Pastor Tim Fahrenthold announced that September 9 would be a day of prayer and fasting in Mason County.
On Wednesday September 9th the Mason County Ministerial Alliance is holding a day of Prayer and Fasting. 2 Chronicles 7:14 reads, “…14 if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, pray, seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” This passage deserves some studying.
I would like to respond to the letters in last week’s mcn by Cindy Morris & Dennis Evans. I know Cindy to be a kind & caring person but I don’t consider Carolyn Karner’s letter or mine in support of hers as coming from the looney bin as she alleges.
Mr. Gerald Gamel, You have told me multiple times that you do not allow the Letter to the Editor forum to be used for personal attacks. The Remember letter in last week's MCN singled out recent contributors for ridicule. The author also called for those contributors to be condemned by the local right and Republicans in Mason for expressing their opinions. This is a clear attack on Constitutionally protected free speech and freedom of the press. The left uses this ridicule, attack and ...
The past two weeks within the month of August have been more troubling to Pattie and I than perhaps any period of time in recent memory. The events that we have just witnessed are not at all uncommon to read about or to watch on the nightly news- news that always seems to ‘happen elsewhere.’ But when tragedy strikes so very close to all of us it seems to be an aberration, something that is not supposed to happen here.
In 1892, the Texas legislature passed a law declaring that if a man left the payroll of a railroad, he had to be paid all wages owed him within 15 days. The railroad, controlled by robber baron Jay Gould, went to court—and prevailed when a Texas court held the new law unconstitutional.
A Few Words About Work
Labor Day. This is the day set aside on our calendar to take a day off from our labors and, ideally, think about the place of work in our lives. Here are a few random thoughts to stimulate your thinking on the what, why, and wherefore of work. Work is the mother of life.
Dinner Rolls courtesy: HEB
If you have a large crowd coming to your house (or living at your house!) this is a recipe for dinner rolls that will make a big bunch to feed them over at least a couple of days. Now, of course, if you’re the person who’s going to bake these beauties up, you may be helping yourself to a few.
16-Year-Old NOT ‘DeFEETed’…
The aura of a special day added to the enchantment of a special place, beautiful Bryant Park in Manhattan. The weather was made to order, unseasonably cool, and a few thousand people--most of them visiting gawkers like me--adorned the grassy pallet of green. Soon, theirs would be a chorus of screams that only teenagers can make when rock star idols, uh, well, rock! Invigorated by a brisk four-block walk from the hotel, I wilted upon seeing this sea of youthful humanity, quiet--ever so qui ...
Free Speech, Free Press, Personal Responsibility..
Over on the other side of the page this week, a letter writer takes me to task for being biased and treating some letter writers differently than others. Usually, I don't respond to direct criticisms in the paper, preferring to keep those interactions one-on-one and professionally distanced from the paper.

Farmers and ranchers impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic are encouraged to sign up for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Coronavirus Food Assistance Program (CFAP) by Sept. 11. “There is still funding left, and many farmers and ranchers in our area could really use the help,” Mason County Farm Bureau President Will Frey said.

Recovery of a Texas Icon: The Texas Horned Lizard
Most Mason County residents born in the 1960s or earlier have fond memories of playing with abundant Texas Horned Lizards in their yards or in open areas around town. These lizards were usually called “Horny Toads” or “Horned Frogs,” although they are lizards rather than amphibians. Their slow gait, easy-going personalities, and delightful appearance (to many, they look like miniature dinosaurs) delighted children of all ages.
