Mason, Texas-October is breast-cancer-awareness month. On Saturday last, a ceremonial Ribbon Cutting took place at Fort McKavett State Historic Site sponsored by the Mason County Chamber of Commerce. Even though Fort McKavett SHS has been open and operating for several decades, they recently joined the Chamber Membership and the ceremony was held in the spirit of welcoming the Site into the fold. The event was occasioned by the unveiling of a new rotating exhibit.
The Texas Farm Bureau (TFB) Learning from the Ground Up Garden Grant Program was created to support schools and organizations as they teach students about the sources of their food, fuel and fiber. And the program is currently accepting applications for the 2020-2021 school year. “Texas Farm Bureau wanted to help educators connect small-scale gardening to the bigger picture of farming operations so students can better understand food production,” Mason County Farm Bureau president Wil ...
Doriann Rochelle Damerau joined the Mason Resource Team in July as our Mason Soil Conservationist. Doriann is the 6th generation of Damerau’s to be raised in Guadalupe County, Texas. She grew up on the family farm in Marion, Texas, where she attended Marion Independent School District, graduating class of 2016. Throughout high school, Doriann was active in FFA and 4-H.
The cooler temperatures sure make it feel more like fall, at least for a few days, and Friday night football seems a little more real than with the heat of just days ago. We have also had some rain, although we will always be glad for the next good rain, but in combination with the lower temperatures it is likely that the landscapes will not need as much water in the coming weeks.
Although the Mason High School varsity football team got off to a superb start in their first road game of the season, the shorthanded Punchers struggled to keep up with Comfort High School in the second half as the host Bobcats pulled away to a 30-6 victory to drop the Punchers to 0-2 overall. After both teams traded punts to begin the game, Comfort got down to the Punchers’ 25-yard line and about to enter the red zone. However, Mason senior outside linebacker Rylan Jordan came up with ...
The JV Punchers traveled to Comanche to take on the Indians last week. It started off a little slow and unpolished as the Punchers went into half time tied 0-0. We began to fix the little mistakes, scoring twice in the 3rd Quarter. Comanche was able to get one back though in the 4th, but it wasn’t enough. The final score was 14-8.

The Mason High School girls’ varsity cross country team impressed for the second consecutive week on Wednesday, Sept. 2 when the Cowgirls placed first amongst eight schools at the Brownwood Invitational held at Gordon Wood Stadium. With 27 points and four runners placing in the top six, the Cowgirls were able to edge out Goldthwaite High School’s 34 points to win the meet. Cowgirls’ senior standout runner Ana Segura finished first overall amongst individuals in the girls’ 3,200-me ...
Mason Young Life has been blessed to be in ministry with Mason high school students for 8 years. As we approach another amazing year of sharing the good news of the Gospel with students, we face a significant financial impact on the ministry due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Out of respect for our struggling families and businesses, we chose to cancel our Spring fundraiser and rely on monthly donors, cash reserves, and “belt tightening” to keep the ministry afloat.

Labor Day without a massive cookout for family and friends or a trip to the lake was not the usual celebration. However, as retirees, we don’t celebrate a day not to work like we used to. Ours was a quiet day. We like quiet days. Class meetings continue on Wednesday evenings with soup at 6 and the meeting begins at 6:30.

ING (Acts 19:1–20)
You too may have seen their commercials on TV, and thought like I did, “What a strange name for a company”. (It’s a Dutch banking and financial service company if you’re wondering – I was.) ING-it’s not even a word. But when we add it to a word, a verb, it then is talking about something that is done over and over again.

Silence is blacktop Since the resurfacing of East Rainey St, the quiet is amazing! The jolting bump, rattle, squeak and clatter of passing trucks with livestock trailers is gone. Instead vehicles quietly hum as they go by, almost unnoticed. Thank you tax payers and the City of Mason Street Department!
Many thank to David Hillis for his informative article on Horny Toads (aka Horned Lizards). And how important it is to NOT kill the red ants (aka Harvester ants)! I was one of the fortunate kids to grow up with horny toads and remember holding one in the palm of my hand and petting it while it closed its eyes (I believed it was happy but perhaps it was simply indulging a little girl). Other horned lizard aficionados might be interested to know there is a Horned Lizard Conservation Society ...
Office workers in New York and Washington going about their normal routines. Suddenly out of the blue, hijacked planes smash into their buildings. In a split second, thousands of people alive one moment are dead the next. Shoppers leisurely walking the streets. Residents relaxing in their seafront apartments. Suddenly a Beirut port storage facility erupts with a monster blast.
Farewell for a While…
Few emotional swings reach from the highest high to lowest low in a period of 60 hours. My wife Brenda and I celebrated our 54th wedding anniversary on August 12. Three days later, our oldest daughter, Julie Choate, succumbed to a pulmonary embolism. In a two-hour period, efforts to revive her failed; her airlift to a Fort Worth hospital was for naught. She was 50, exuberant, optimistic, hard-working and a champion of the underdog, spending most waking hours as principal at McCall Element ...

Last week, I had a conversation with Scott's son, William, about the pluses and minuses about moving to Mason to attend school. He's been enrolled at Austin High School; but, they were only doing virtual attendance and that wasn't something Will found satisfying. Our talk was bluntly honest and I told him the great things about living in a small town; but, also shared some of the negative things that go along with that life.

There is no need to suffer chronic pain with the availability of treatments offered through Hill Country Memorial Medical Group, according to Ralph G. Menard, MD, Pain Management and Palliative Care. “I don’t have a magic wand,” Menard said. “But there are a lot of interventional treatments we can do that can greatly lessen or eliminate pain.” Menard generally treats chronic pain, which has been recently redefined by the Texas Medical Board as pain lasting longer than 30 days.
Crackling Corn Bread
Crackling or fried pork skins are used in many different fashion in South Louisiana/Creole food. Most times they’re eaten as snacks, however, I’ve also seen them used as a flavoring for grits and/or corn bread. I’ve used both pork skins and dried onions; either one will work well. Ingredients: ½ cup hog crackings or pork skins, crushed 2 tablespoons melted butter ½ cup minced green onions 1 ½ cups corn meal ½ cup flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 tablespoon sugar

The Noble Life of a Dung-Roller
It takes a special kind of person to see beauty in a dung beetle. But what magnificent creatures they are! You have probably seen dung beetles rolling balls of dung across a pasture, often with a one dung beetle riding on the ball as it is rolled along by another.
