Water seems to be a major theme of several different conversations around the City office in the past week. On Saturday there was a major water leak on the east side of town that the water crew worked hard to get repaired. For several hours the water pressure throughout town was down due to the difficulty in isolating the broken pipe for repairs and our City workers, including Administrator John Palacio, were working hard in the water and mud to get the repair made and everyone’s water back ...

Mason High School varsity football is now on a winning streak as the Punchers improved to 2-4 on Friday, Oct. 2 with a dominant 48-7 victory on the road against the Center Point High School Pirates in the district opener for both teams.
The Punchers wasted little time on offense as senior standout quarterback Mattew Kerr got Mason on the board first with an opening-drive score.
Facing a third-and-three situation, Kerr kept the ball on the quarterback option, made an impressive cutback to ...

The JV Purple team competed against Marble Falls JV last Thursday night. The Punchers welcomed the opportunity to show their skills against someone that we don’t normally get to play.
They got out to a hot start going with a couple turnovers, a special teams score and a couple offensive scores.
7th vs. Junction
The seventh grade Punchers played a hard fought game but game up short as they lost to Junction, 14-0.
We just couldn’t complete any drives and they were able to hit a couple big plays on us for a couple of scores. Overall the defense played well, aside from the two scores.
7th grade
The seventh grade Punchers came to play as they put up a score of 38-0 against Center Point, earning their second shutout of the season. The offense moved the ball extremely well and the defense did a great job of taking away any momentum from Center Point before it ever had a chance to get started.
Scoring for the seventh grade were Kalen Langehennig with a rushing touchdown, Trevor Loeffler with a rushing touchdown, Fisher Bradley with a rushing touchdown, Kolton Smith with a ...

Throughout the years, every time I’ve seen the title of this column, I have thought of the 23rd Psalm and flocks of sheep (or in our case, Angora goats). If you have not been a “herdsman”, you may wonder “How in the world do you get those critters to go where they need to go?” Those critters can be rather willful, but they do respond to gentle guidance and to the fulfillment of their need for food.
The shepherd’s staff as a tool, has been around for centuries and can be used in ...
On Saturday, a motorist in eastern Llano County rammed a trooper's vehicle. Then, they began running. They led a high speed pursuit that came through Llano, west on Highway 29, then into Mason and out toward Hext. Spikes were put out at several locations; but, the vehicle continued to evade law enforcement before finally turning down toward London and ending the chase.
As is often the case in life, the incident that began this chase neither began nor ended here in Mason.
I have friends who are reasonable, rational Democrats. That’s all right, but the Democrat party has been hijacked by the socialist/communist wing of the party. Former leaders seem to have accepted what they previously opposed.
They now support abortion on demand, open borders, sanctuary cities, “Green New Deal”, reduced military, defunding the police, confiscation of firearms, elimination of private health insurance, free college, elimination of student debts, and free health care for ...
The other day I was driving down highway 87 between Harper road and town and a strange cat went loping across the road. It was too big for a house cat, it wasn’t a bobcat, mountain lion nor panther. I had never seen a cat built like this and with this coloring.
So upon research on the Web I determined that without a doubt the cat I saw was a Jaguarundi.
The title A Breath of Fresh Air partly suggests that Fall 2020 has arrived. However, its real purpose is to honor a special lady on a special occasion. She is Lorine Metz and she will soon “Celebrate a Century”. She has always looked at life with a genuine sweet and compassionate spirit that is truly uplifting.
(If you watch Texas State football, you will notice in big letters on the playing turf, "Jim Wacker Field." These are some thoughts about the man behind the name, written at the time of his death.)
Jim Wacker is dead. UNBELEEEEVABLE!!
That trademark exclamation of Jim's describes the feelings of we who knew him.
At the time of year when parents, children and teachers were committing to take on a new school year, our son-in-law Bryan Choate and our grandchildren Ben, 19, and Brittin, 16, were dealing with the sudden death of Julie (Mrs. Bryan) Choate.
Bryan’s wife and the children’s mother, she died of a pulmonary embolism at the prime of her professional life as principal of McCall Elementary School in Aledo.
At age 50, she was the oldest of our three daughters, all of whom have degrees in el ...
We welcome fall. The days have been cooler. We could use rain. But, most importantly, Daylight Savings Time ends soon. I have not saved any time. There are still the same number of sunlight hours each day. What a waste of legislative time. If you want more sun time after work, go to work earlier.

Curious Pepper was rescued from the Mason Pound last week and this 4-5 year old heeler mix is a little bit of a mess. We are working to get him all fixed up! Sometime in his past he sustained a leg injury and it was not taken care of properly.
Frontera’s Mason Clinic now offers both on-line and in-person appointments thanks to the experience gained earlier this year as we adapted to the realities of Covid-19.
Frontera Healthcare began expanding patient access late last year by implementing telemedicine platforms for medical and behavioral health services. Tele-behavioral health and tele-psych services had already been utilized in our clinics for a few years.
But with all of the uncertainty of COVID-19 in March of 2020, Fronte ...

Last week I wrote about the life history of hummingbirds of Mason County. Most people encounter hummingbirds as they feed on the nectar of flowers, or the artificial nectar in hummingbird feeders. Many other animal groups—such as butterflies, moths, bees, and even some bats—also feed on the nectar produced by flowers.
Alfred Woodcock presents The Return of the Birds is an educational exhibit showcasing thirty birds of the Texas Hill Country. This 2020 exhibit is at the Riverside Nature Center (150 Francisco Lemos Street/Kerrville) which includes a human size bird nest. Each quarter, new artwork of local artists is displayed to go along with this exhibit.
