Dear Members, Mason Community, and Friends, The past year has felt like a constant battering of unprecedented unknowns. I hope to assure you, while also announcing that I am stepping down as the Executive Director in December of 2020. Major changes have opened up new doors for business opportunities in Mason, reminded us again how grateful we are to live in a small town, and allowed the opportunity to take a step back and ask what we hope to achieve in the future.
For the first time in a month, the Mason High School varsity football team played at the Puncherdome and celebrated Homecoming with a dominant 67-0 victory over Harper High School. After the Punchers deferred the kickoff, the visiting Longhorns would get the ball first and go on a drive led by Harper quarterback Braden Strickland and running back Keegan Iturizza that ate up a decent amount of time. However, the Mason defense got a key stop on a fourth-and-short to force Harper to punt and ...
7th grade vs. Harper The seventh grade Punchers played a well executed game against Harper as they came away with another victory, 20-6. Both offense and defense played well and were much improved from last week. Scoring for the seventh grade were Carsten Hays, Ray Row and Kalen Langehennig with rushing touchdowns and Fisher Bradley with a 2 point conversion run.

You Can't Take It With You... Share While You Can!
One of the repeated lessons we were given as children was that material possessions should never become so important to us that we forget the people around us. Part of those lessons was the repeating of the adage, "You can't take it with you." As a child, I only understood that on a physical basis -- of course you can't take your possessions with you after you die, they don't travel well.
What are you voting for??? I have friends who are reasonable, rational, Republicans. That's all right, but the Republican party has been hijacked by socialist/communist wing of the Party. Former leaders seem to have accepted what they previously opposed. I don't know what I believe on abortion, but I believe it's a woman's choice.
If my misfortune would have been shared by you, you too would loath Socialism with the same passion the world loathes COVID-19. When I was born, the nurse told my mother: “You are lucky Dorchen, you gave birth to a perfect child. Had there been any problem with your child you would never have seen your little girl.
Editor, Regardless of one’s political affiliation, if you find yourselves angrily and viciously fighting to control the direction and destiny of this country, and feeling like you’re battling an indescribable and unmanageable force, and using the Ivory soapbox from which to fire your verbal missiles (either to accuse or to gloat), then you shouldn’t be doing it. There’s a bigger spiritual battle against self-righteousness and control, both of which always cause one to get spoiled.
This week let me mention some other good people in Mason Texas: DAVE AND ANDY ROSBERG, two of the most caring and knowledgeable veterinarians I know. They both have that personal touch. RANDY BECKMAN, who is so caring and concerned for the families in this community. At our Mason Clinic, there’s BRENDA BLACK, so good at drawing blood that I very seldom even feel the “stick” MONTY AND ROSIE HORNE, very thorough and caring.
Mixed Media
This is a thank you note to everyone who helped me during my breast cancer treatment. The four paint panels were a practice for what we thought was the main painting. It turned out that this piece received more notice, due to its stronger color scheme and emotional statements. Bridget likes to repurpose objects for her projects-hence the drawer, which is a perfect frame for this project.
In September of 2019, Bridget approached me about doing something to enter a show in Kerrville. We worked for more than a week to create two pieces, allowing the process to flow and develop without force. The goal was to create a piece that expressed my journey without being overly pink. We began with a previously used canvas, which connotes life before cancer.
Class and Integrity
Jim Wacker, who you will remember from last week's column, was a coach in the best sense of that word; a teacher and instructor not only on the football field, but also in the field of life When former players of his from Texas Lutheran, North Dakota State, Southwest Texas, Texas Christian and Minnesota gathered at Jim's funeral, they naturally talked about football and the influence he had on their long-ago athletic careers.
With Head Held High…
Mike Wilson, editor of the Dallas Morning News since 2015, has resigned the position, and the almost six-year tenure probably has seemed much longer. He was charged with what likely is an inevitability, that of converting most delivery of news from “the printed page” to digital transmission. Somehow, he has maintained excellence in both.
It is the middle of October. I am wondering if we will make it past election day. There is very little to watch on TV. If you flip channels, you will find experts giving opinions that are on opposite ends of the spectrum. I majored in journalism in college. The professor of my journalism ethics class is probably bouncing in his grave.
We have known for a while now that eventually we would have to make some changes at the Recycle Center. The recycle market has been bad for a few years and continues to decline. Unfortunately many of the items that we take in at the Recycle Center have no market value.
Farmers and ranchers from across Mason County recently met to help shape policy for the state’s largest farm organization. “Each year, we invite Mason County Farm Bureau members to discuss issues important to agriculture and rural Texas,” Will Frey, Mason County Farm Bureau president, said. “It’s a true grassroots effort that enables each one of us to have a stronger voice through Texas Farm Bureau.” But this year was a little different due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Although ...

Rustic Bread courtesy: Adam Leonti
This simple yet delicious loaf is from Mr. Leonti’s Brooklyn Bread Lab, and relies upon an overnight rest and fresh yeast to ensure the development of the sour, tangy flavor and chewy texture of sourdough bread without having to mess with “starter.” It’s a great bread, but you do have to plan ahead at least one day! Ingredients: 4 cups of bread flour 2 ½ teaspoons kosher salt 1 ¼ teaspoons yeast 2 cups room temperature water All-Purpose flour (for dusting) Process: U ...

The Remarkable Life Cycle of a Monarch Butterfly
This past week I enjoyed watching the Monarchs fly south across our Mason County ranch, pausing to feed on Gayfeather and Cow Pen Daisies. Sometimes I even stumble across clusters of the butterflies roosting overnight in our trees. They are on a 2,000–3,000 mile journey to a specific fir forest in the mountains of Michoacan, Mexico, where they have never been before. It may seem that Monarchs are flying by at a lazy pace, but individual Monarchs have been recorded flying as much as 265 mi ...
