Last Friday I, along with several other local citizens, attended a town hall gathering with our retiring Congressional Representative Mike Conaway. This was a part of a tour of the District for Mike to say a heartfelt “thank you” for the support and involvement of our local citizens in listening and recommending policy directions in Washington, DC that impact our west Texas region.

In the weeks since I announced my retirement from the newspaper at the end of this year, I've had lots of conversations with people who are curious as to my plans. Put plainly, it's a blank canvas that I eagerly anticipate painting in the coming years. Financially, I'll still need to do something to keep income rolling in; but, I'm not desperate to immediately step into something new.
After the questions, those same people often comment on how much they'll miss my weekly column in the paper ...
Flags everywhere across this great nation flew at half mast after the recent passing of justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, a liberal icon on the Supreme Court for decades. She was venerated by many on the left & held in high regard by some who opposed her views. Her body lay in state in the Capitol Rotunda & was viewed by thousands.
This week I’d like to highlight those from the past and present who contributed to my Katemcy/Camp Air community:
BERT AND EFFIE HAINES, who never turned anyone away from their door. They fed, clothed, housed, and even found job for people in need.
BABE AND GLADYS NOBLES, who raised a family on a sandy land farm of peanuts, watermelons, and cantaloupe.
"Happy Mirthday, Ron."
"Thanks, Tex. Nice of you to remember."
"You're welcome. However, even though 1 know you were born on October 24th, 1 must admit your exact age slips my mind."
"Well, I'm not going to tell you how old 1 am. Except to say 1 don't have to buy an antique to sit down on something that's 85 years old."
Thus began Ron Birk and Tex Luther's semi-annual "Mirth day Party."

The words “wash and wear” exploded in the 1950s, thanks to the introduction of treated cotton and synthetics that meant clothing could be worn straight from the washing machine. Ironing board sales plummeted, and housewives singing “Wash Day Blues” gave way to “Happy Days are Here Again.”
Never in our dreams--up to and including wildest--did it occur that “wash and wear” would be used around the world today, or near thereto.
We hear it endlessly: “Wash your hands.

Sarge is an attention seeking dog who we have learned has a separation anxiety challenge. He loves his people so much that he is super afraid of being left. This is treatable with patience, trust and time. Second Chance has had other dogs with this tendency, they have all become wonderful pets.

I have received several queries from readers who asked about “velvet bucks”—also known as “cactus bucks” or (incorrectly) as “stag bucks.” These are all names that people sometimes use to refer to bucks that don’t shed the velvet on their antlers in the fall. Such bucks are found occasionally throughout the range of Whitetail Deer, but they occur at a relatively high frequency in the Llano Uplift area in Mason and Llano counties.
With football season in full swing I thought I would share a really good tailgate or backyard dish. These baked potatoes are a different way to satisfy both meat lovers and potato lovers. They can be served with assorted toppings, such as shredded cheese, chopped green onions, jalapeños, salsa, black olives or sour cream.
