Dear Gerry,
The October 26th issue of The New Yorker ran a list of vaccines currently in development. One vaccine might rate particular interest in our area.
“Blubbering Vaccine: As men age their immune systems are less able to resist sentimentality, and they cry more, like babies. Ten older men were given the vaccine and were then asked to watch the scene in ‘Old Yeller’ in which Old Yeller dies.
Voters will cast their ballot on several important races this fall, including U.S. president, and the rural vote is an important one, according to Mason County Farm Bureau.
“Farmers and ranchers are a small part of the population, but rural Texas and rural America have a considerable stake in the outcome of the election,” Will Frey, Mason County Farm Bureau president, said.
Agriculture is one of the top industries in Texas and in the nation.
In the Lone Star State, the economic impa ...

The annual Hunters' Guide is inside this week's paper. It's a healthy 56 pages and, I think, does a really good job of presenting Mason at its best for all those camo-clad visitors that have started their annual fall migration.
We've worked with Macy Ledbetter of Spring Creek Outdoors for many years now to provide really good articles about deer and wildlife for our readers.
The print on canvas is titled “America’s Vision of Liberty.” In the generic
landscape, overlooking a valley, there are 20 symbols of America’s founding and
heritage such as the Statue of Liberty, the Liberty Bell, the Capital building, the
10 Commandments, the Bible, and “Old Glory.”
It also depicts founding figures such as Washington, Jefferson, Adams,
Lincoln and Sitting Bull.
This patriotic rendering by the artist, larry Dyke, was given to President

It had been a bad year for deer blinds on the Birk's Red Hill Ranch. When you have 14 of these small, enclosed hunting stations scattered around the pastures you expect a certain amount of upkeep. But this year had been ridiculous.
For example: there was the case of the toppled tower blind.
Google gets the last laugh, probably far more often than we know. Include one letter more than needed to “Google” a subject turns research to clabber quicker than political candidates can call their opponents liars. (Seems like mere decades ago that such comments were tenderized, usually beginning with sentences like, “My worthy opponent deals loosely with the facts,” or maybe, “He is known to spend much of his time in the company of ‘terminological inexactitudes’.”)

We are having beautiful fall weather. I see a few leaves changing colors in town. There is a chill in the air some mornings. Our dog lets me know if it is cold outside. She wants right back in. I don’t know how she will act when winter gets here.
The Art United Methodist Church is gradually returning to normal.

AUSTIN, Texas—The Texas Historical Foundation, a 66-year old preservation organization, has announced a grant to the Seaquist House Foundation. THF board member and former Foundation President Tom Doell recently presented the check to SHF representatives Pat Dixon and Nonie Stringer.
This donation is the second one given by THF to assist with the restoration of the 1887 home in Mason.
Mason’s Scarlet Punchers, those intrepid women “of a certain age,” who absolutely enjoy living life to the fullest, had another fabulous get-together in October at the home of Sherie Clarkson. Our small but mighty group easily fit around Sherie’s vintage library table, which held a place of prominence in her newly-completed remodeled kitchen.
On Halloween Night from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, the library will be passing out candy for trick-or-treaters. The foyer will be decorated and we will be in costume (with a literary theme, of course). We will be masked and ready to safely pass out candy. We hope that you will make the library one of your trick-or-treat stops this Halloween!
From left to right:
1st place—Mitzi Drennan, Cindy Henrich, Rita Ash, and Bertha Templeton.
2nd place —Sherrie Clarkson, Cynthia Bauer, and Minnie Schmidt.
3rd place—Sherrie Patrick; Patsy Brandenberger; Connie Stockbridge; and Amy Herring.
Taffy is a friendly and eager to please cattle dog mix. She can be a little shy at first, but once she feels secure you can see her confidence grow! She has spent most of her life outside but would adapt nicely to an inside home. Our volunteers think she will make a great family companion!

A topic that appears to be on many readers’ minds is global climate change. Is it real? How serious is it? When will it affect Mason County? How will it affect Mason County? Is there anything we can do about it?
Let’s begin with the fact of global climate change. There is no doubt that the Earth is warming rapidly at present.
I recently had a couple of requests to re-run the “ The Mason Puncher Tavern Burger Recipe” I think that with this being the midst of Fall Football season it brings back memories of those of us that couldn’t wait to get to a “Mason Puncher” home football game to have a “Tavern Burger”.
