The Heart of Texas Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas (DRT) met on Monday of this week to approve a new slate of officers for the coming two years. Elected to serve are: President -- Cynthia Quinn; Vice President – Cynthia Sutton; Treasurer – Linda Davis; Secretary – Sheila Van Zant; Registrar – Jerry Wilkinson; Chaplain – Colleen Laman; Historian – Judy Hanks; and Publicity – Shelly Perkins.

The Mason Community Foundation was pleased to present a check to the Seaquist House Foundation recently, providing grant funds to further secure the property by way of fencing across the eastern edge as well as screening for windows and doors. Previous grant funding to this project has provided for security cameras and outdoor lighting and to create a kitchen area with cupboards and hot water sink for use during tours and special events. The Mason Lions club met Tuesday, April 4th, for its monthly business meeting. There were 34 members and one visitor in attendance. Lion President, Jess Irwin, recognized several Lions for achieving membership milestones: Eddie Preiss - 15 years; Nolan Donop - 45 years; Pat Reardon - 15 years; and, George Brannies - 45 years. Lion Treasurer, Gaylon Thorn, gave a Treasurer's report for the first quarter of 2017.
After all was said and done, this year’s book sale was the best ever! Even with so many books sold, Wendy and Craton took a truckload of books to the Concho Valley Adult Literacy Council. This organization uses some of the books in their literacy programs, puts them in their own book sale, and ships books to Third World countries.
To air is human During the past half-century or so I’ve traveled in huge commercial jets, small, private airplanes, and by helicopter. Once I even paid real, American dollars for the privilege of taking half an airplane ride, submitting myself to a fall of almost two miles without benefit of mechanical conveyance, depending entirely on a glorified bed sheet to retard my vertically downward velocity enough to keep me from being pulverized on impact with the earth.
Your Life Isn't That Important! Last week was filled with tragedies. There were several accidents in the Mason area during the week; but, the one that really jumped out was the head-on collision between a pickup and a church bus down near Leakey. Authorities are still investigating the wreck. Video that was posted online by a motorist following the pickup prior to the wreck show it drifting all over the two-lane highway shortly before the accident.
The Mason Square Museum will celebrate its 10th Anniversary with two very special events on Wednesday, April 5. The Museum board will honor the Museum’s docents with a reception at the Museum. The loyal docents have greeted over 30,000 visitors since the doors opened in 2007 and have welcomed guests from around the world, including Australia, England, China, Ireland, Germany, Canada, Japan, South Africa, the Czech Republic and Mexico.
