James Washington “J.W”. Haines, of Mason, passed away on Wednesday, February 15, at the age of 87. The Mason Co. M. Beven Eckert Memorial Library is hosting two special events next week. On Tuesday, Houston artist Vickie McMillan will be in the Stribling Room to lead you in creating our community collaborative painting #2. It will be unique in depicting our history and culture. Vickie will be here until 3:00 p.m.

Cooking with Friends completed their second cooking class on Thursday, February 16 by making hamburger patties and discussing the differences between grilling meat or putting it on the BBQ. Grilling provides a direct high heat and short cook time. The BBQ process is much different with indirect low heat and a long cook time.
The Mason Lions Club met Tuesday, February 14th, for its weekly luncheon meeting. There were 30 members and 2 visitors in attendance. “Boss” Lion Jess Irwin announced these February birthdays: Lion Michael Murphy on the 15th, Lion Mark Lehmberg on the 17th, and Lion Mel McCallum on the 28th. “Boss” Jess recounted a valentine legend.

“Thunder in February, Frost in April!” So, mark it on your calendar for a frost on April 19th. However, one just has to love Texas weather. Folks up north have to put up with snow and ice all winter long. Days and days of cold weather. Some don’t see dry normal weather for months.
A Commotion at the Cemetery.... Sounds at the general store in the Thicket tend to be predictable. Most likely heard after weekday refills of coffee are consumed is the shuffle of dominoes. Four geezers usually are seated at the game table by 8:30 or 9:00. Menial chores--described as pressing upon arrival-- suddenly become trivial. As the game begins, they laugh about threats of bodily harm to be inflicted if any player is caught cheating.
