Slumgullion Stew
We haven’t had a lot of “stew” weather this winter but I have been hungry for beef stew. This is a recipe I picked up one of the times we went to Colorado One of our favorite places to stay is Lake City, Colorado. Jeep rides by day and sitting by the fire at night.
We had an exciting weekend at our house. Granddaughter Amber celebrated her birthday. We added in the other three that had birthdays in the past few weeks and had a big celebration. Amber topped off her party with an ice cream cake. It was yummy.
Tad Leifeste had a little mishap on Saturday.
“Use it up.
Wear it out.
Make it do.
Or do without.”
That’s what they said during WWII.
That’s the motto folks lived by.
Things were scarce.
Rationed.
Expensive.
Dear.
Things like food.
Fuel.
Electricity.
Paper products.
Even toilet paper.
Great-aunt Tootsie said they were limited to one single square each time.
Yikes.
Everything else, it seems, was equally precious.
Glass.
Plastic.
Metal and steel.
Cotton.
Rubber.
Amazing.
So different from life today.

The Mighty Mason Puncher Band will have a concert open to the public next Monday, February 27th, at 7 p.m. The High School Band will be the only band performing and they will play their music for the UIL Concert Contest.
The pieces will be “Monterey March” by LaPlante, “Alpine Meadow” by Hodges, and “Fireball!” by Beck.

Meet NAXOS. He is a 1-1/2 year old male kitty who is looking for his forever home. Naxos is a very social and affectionate guy. He also likes to talk to you when you walk up to give him a little scratch. He loves to play but then usually finds his box to settle into for a little pre-lunch siesta.

Jane Eckert was never afraid or shy about expressing her opinion; however, she also saw no reason to draw focus to herself. When her opinion was needed, she gave it, then moved on to the next item on the agenda.
I just finished typesetting her obituary for the paper, and in typical fashion, it is short and to the point.

Simona Valdez is a beloved member of the First Baptist Church, but also beloved in the Mason community.
On February 18th Simona will turn 90 years old. A lifelong member of Mason, Simona has been a widow for many years and does not have children of her own.
On Sunday February 19th at 2:00 p.m.
Mason Junior High participated in the TCEA Area Robotics Competition on Saturday, January 21st in Ballinger, TX. We had four teams qualify to compete in the area competition and placed out of 12 competing teams.
Placing 3rd was Phoebe, the Selfie Bot,the team includes Karli Bauer, Eliza Cope, and Abigail Wallace.
Jane Wiggins Eckert passed away Friday, February 10, 2017, after a short illness.
She was born August 20, 1932, in Waco, Texas, to Oscar Boardman and Cecile Allison Wiggins who preceded her in death along with her brother, Billy Wiggins. She graduated from Christian College in Columbia, Missouri, in 1951 and from The University of Texas at Austin in 1954 and was a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority.
