Refugio Relief Thank You Mason! On behalf of Clothes for Care and MHS class officers, I would like to thank everyone who supported our garage sale. With your help we raised over 5,600 dollars which has been earmarked for home repairs for a student at Refugio High School. Thank you for your generosity.
For those of you that missed Ethan West’s program on his hiking of the Appalachian Trail—you should’ve been here! Ethan gave a fun, informative program with lots of pictures, and who knew he was so entertaining and funny? We had a great turnout, and I’m so happy that we were able to have him speak, especially since our Library Book Club October book is Grandma Gatewood’s Walk.
No one yet knows why a deranged sociopath decided to start shooting people at a music concert in Las Vegas. The man had never done anything that would indicate such behavior was even a possibility. He had no criminal record, and I understand he had only earned two speeding tickets in his life.
I thought I smelled fall this morning! It’s a smell that is in the air, but you really can’t explain it. Crisp? Maybe, but I do love to smell it. Fall is one of my favorite seasons. My body wasn’t ready for summer, but it’s in great shape for Fall and Winter. Speaking of smells, Coffee from a percolator!
Getting Out More Often… The admonition--one made by generations--urges others to “get out more often.” I’ve made such suggestions many times in a spirit of good humor. The older one gets, however, the more important it is to seriously consider such suggestions. They likely “fit.” As long as folks can “get out,” predictable results include both invigoration and restoration!... ***** We recently attended a high school homecoming football game; it triggered reminders of ...
This is a busy time of year. The weather is hot and then cool and then damp. I seem to be totally unmotivated to get anything done. Maybe some cool weather predicted for this week will spur me into action. Our fall color is limited in this part of Texas.
Tabula rasa. Beginner’s mind. Blank page. Clean slate. Ah, clarity. Simplicity. Emptiness. The opposite of “horror vacui.” That is, fear of empty space. Aristotle thought it up. Believing nature feared emptiness. That empty spaces sucked in gases and liquids to avoid being empty. Whoever heard of nature avoiding anything. Look at the plethora of hurricanes this season. Later on, however, Pascal and others proved him wrong. Still, horror vacui remains. Esp ...
During the last few weeks, I've been communicating with Merle and Doris Cope's son, Steve Horner. Steve had a thriving business in the U. S. Virgin Islands... had a thriving business. Then came Irma. There was almost a week when no communication at all was possible, and Steve's family wasn't even sure he had survived the storm.
Dear Gerry: Last week at the library one of the Elders on the Llano approached me with some heat about #name-changing and Correctus a Politicus in Mason. The Elder pointed out that we need to make some serious name changes right here in Mason City, starting with Gooch Cemetery and the names of some streets. He pointed out that in the cemetery we need to remove the tombstones of Jack Lee and his wife to avoid affronting anyone about the Lee name.
Dear Gerry, I have been reading Kendal Hemphill’s columns since subscribing to the Mason County News, two years before we moved here, in 2005. I have also read Dr. Charles Keatings’ two letters to the editor, and I agree with one of his contentions - that Kendal’s columns, of late, have been less humorous and more critical, bordering on snarky. I enjoyed hearing about Kendal’s adventures camping,, waterfall jumping, etc., his family life, and all things gun- and hunting-related.
