The Board of Trustees of MISD met for their regular meeting on September 25, 2017 at the School Administration Office. Board President Jeff Durst called the meeting to order at 6:00 pm with members Tommy Bierschwale, Jim Bob Smith, Julio Ramon, Tina Cantu-Navarro, Treg Hudson and Kathryn Martin in attendance.

On September 26, 2017 the Riata Service Organization’s monthly meeting was held at the home of Joan Whitaker. Hostesses were Kay Evans and Jerrie Owens with 28 members in attendance. The meeting was called to order by President, Laura Tallent. Members recited the Womens Creed, reports were given by officers and committee chairpersons.

“Boss” Lion Jim Heidelberg convened the quarterly business meeting of the Mason Lions Club on October 3. Thirty-one members were present. Separate meetings of the club’s Board of Directors and the directors of the Mason Lions Club Charitable Foundation preceded the business meeting. The Lions Club members applauded Lion Marty Bentson for his exemplary leadership role in the “11th Annual Gem of the Hill Country 5K/10K Run/Walk” fund raiser held on Saturday, September 30.

It seems that this week we may have a taste of Fall weather to go along with all of the Fall activities we have in town. One of the challenging issues we have all dealt with over the past few months is the constant pesky companions we have whenever we are out of doors.

The preseason for the Mason Punchers ended with their sixth consecutive win on Friday night with a 47-0 win over the Ballinger Bearcats. The Punchers received the opening kickoff, and began a game that they would control for all four quarters. Four minutes of play in, Otto Wofford made the final carry for Mason on a sustained drive.

The White team traveled to Salado last week for their fourth consecutive road game. Mistakes hurt the Punchers as they had four turnovers. Salado was able to capitalize on those mistakes and won the game 28-0.

7th grade The 7th grade Punchers played a great game and played great defensively, holding Ballinger to only two scores in their third win of the season, 38-15. The offensive linemen improved from last week making a difference for our backs as they scored 5 times. 4H enrollment began on September 1 and will continue to October 31. Children who wish to enroll ages 9 to 18 are $20 for the year and must enroll online at https://texas.4honline.com. This fee will go to $25 on November 1. Children kindergarten to age 8 may register for free but must enroll on the 4H online system as well.

Riata Service Organization is hosting its largest fundraising effort ever to benefit the Mason Clinic. Cowboy Casino Night, an exciting party of fun and games, will be held at Lea Lou Coop on October 14, 2017. In addition to games of Blackjack, Craps, Roulette, Texas Hold’em and slot machines, there will be delicious appetizers, live and silent auctions, and lots of raffle items. No real gambling will take place, as real money will not be used to play the games.

The Mason County Republican Women are honored to host a “ Meet and Greet Coffee” for Congressman Mike Conaway on Wednesday, October 18th at 8:00 AM in the Stribling Room of the Mason County Library. The Republican Women’s Club had a convivial party at Lea Lou Co-op Saturday evening to welcome six new members to the club. President Joni Matthews hosted the party at the successful conclusion of this quarter’s membership drive. The Club will host Congressman Conaway for a morning coffee at 8:00 am on Wednesday, October 18, 2017, at the Eckert Library. The Club will meet at least every two months for interesting speakers on current matters of public interest.

It’s a Pink Fiesta and all women in Mason County are invited to attend. Invite your friends and join us Thursday, October 19th, 5:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 224 Broad Street. What is a Pink Fiesta? It is an awareness event for breast and cervical cancer that will help women discover how early detection can provide the best protection for these two cancers.

The Mason County AgriLife Extension office has partnered with the Texas Department of Agriculture to bring you 5 hours of speakers in one location on Wednesday, October 25. For your attendance, you will be given 5 CEU’s. The event will be held at the Eckert Civic Center, 1024 McKinley Ave in Mason from 8 AM to 2 PM.

As part of ongoing diabetes education efforts, the Hill Country Memorial Wellness Center will host several seminars and classes beginning Oct. 12 through the end of the year at the HCM Wellness Center (1006 S. State Hwy. 16) 
in Fredericksburg. “Diabetes is a serious condition, but it can be managed and even prevented by taking action,” said Kim Thornton, a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator.

John Rector Nicholson, Jr. (JR, Nick, J Rector, or Sonny) died peacefully late on the night of October 6, 2017 surrounded by the people and pets who loved him. It was the latest he’d ever stayed up. Born January 1, 1929, to Mary Elizabeth (White) Nicholson and Dr. John Rector Nicholson, Sr.

Refugio Relief Thank You Mason! On behalf of Clothes for Care and MHS class officers, I would like to thank everyone who supported our garage sale. With your help we raised over 5,600 dollars which has been earmarked for home repairs for a student at Refugio High School. Thank you for your generosity.

For those of you that missed Ethan West’s program on his hiking of the Appalachian Trail—you should’ve been here! Ethan gave a fun, informative program with lots of pictures, and who knew he was so entertaining and funny? We had a great turnout, and I’m so happy that we were able to have him speak, especially since our Library Book Club October book is Grandma Gatewood’s Walk.

No one yet knows why a deranged sociopath decided to start shooting people at a music concert in Las Vegas. The man had never done anything that would indicate such behavior was even a possibility. He had no criminal record, and I understand he had only earned two speeding tickets in his life.
