Like others, I’ve been watching Harvey on TV. The news crews are in shock and awe over the fact that Texans help others. They came in monster Pick Ups, with boats. They offered their homes, food to total strangers. Guess, they don’t do this in New York? What a shame! The law enforcers have warned, “We carry in Texas, so don’t loot!” The coast has a long way to recover, but they will!
‘Greasy Spoon’ Lingo… They were called “greasy spoons,” those folksy diners of yesteryear. Printed menus were limited, but waitpersons had their slang menu “down pat.” The one I remember best had a single line of stools, and patrons typically waited in outdoor lines for weekday “lunch runs.” Admittedly, I’ve already used this week’s quota of quotation marks, but strong in my memory is how the “waitperson” yelled food orders to the nearby cook, who had to be “qu ...
Garden Stroganoff Skillet Meal There are a lot of convenience foods out there and Hamburger Helper that has stood the test of time since 1971. The Hamburger Helper mascot is the “Helping Hand” or “Lefty”. Some of the varieties include; Cheeseburger, Cheeseburger Macaroni, Lasagna, Philly Cheesesteak and Bacon Cheeseburger. You know I love simple and inexpensive it possible and everything in one dish.
Monday holidays seem like such a good idea. However, at this stage of retirement and dealing with grands, it becomes a distraction. Sorry, I sound a little grumpy. I will work on my happy face. It was a long week keeping up with Hurricane Harvey and the friends and relatives in the path, or proposed path.
S. As in, September. The 19th letter of the English alphabet. From the Greek sigma. A borrowing from the Phoenicians. They might want it back. “Pardon me, but that S belongth to uth. And we’re tired of lithping.” But sigma is the name of the 18th letter of the Greek alphabet. Not 19th. According to trusty Webster. Makes Sense. Makes your head Spin. S. Around the Square. The “S” word. A game to play when you’re feeling Silly. Or Smart. After play ...
Before Harvey ever made its first landfall on the Texas coast, I remember having a conversation with a friend and discussing some of the problems with a hurricane striking the upper Texas coast. As we've seen, its flat topography makes the area susceptible to flooding, even when weaker systems move through the area. What concerned me was the heavy concentration of ports and refineries in the area from Corpus Christi up to Beaumont.
Housecleaning All the Little Things!!!! Sometimes, there's no one thing rattling around my brain. Instead, there's a bunch of little things, all competing for attention. None of them may be worthy of an entire column on its own; but, I figure that they still deserve to see the light of day for at least a short while. Hurricane Harvey Mason missed a bullet with this tropical system.
Trump Truth After last week Trump is my hero. Some folks made fun of President Trump for looking at the sun without glasses during the eclipse, but in truth he was showing strong leadership. For years the elitist liberal medical establishment, supported by the liberal elitist media, has told us it is not safe to look at the sun.
Recycling I heartily agree with City Commissioner Bonnie Beam about our landfill (or any landfill for that matter). In this day and age when recycling is the best way to not have to overfill our city and county “dumps”, it just seems a shame that more people don’t recycle. I was so excited and pleased when the late June Brandenberger led the way for Mason having our own recycling center!
Inconvenient This letter is in response to Kendal Hemphill’s column “An Inconvenient Electric Bill,” published on August 16. The gist of Hemphill’s column is that Al Gore is a hypocrite, therefore climate change isn’t real. While Gore is certainly guilty of these things and is nowhere near one of my favorite people, that has nothing to do with the validity of climate science.
