I’ll start by apologizing for not having an article for last week’s paper. With that being said, I just want to express my appreciation for all the hard work this team has put forth this year. They recaptured the state team championship and were the first team in the history of UIL to go 1-2 in all the doubles divisions at the state UIL championships.
Twelve MHS students competed at the State UIL Academic Meet from May 23-25 at the University of Texas in Austin. By the end of the contest, four students had earned medals, and the full high school academic team had placed fourth overall.
Jackson Chapman, a junior, won the Bronze Medal, 3rd overall, in Ready Writing.
It’s hard to believe another school year has just ended! Our wonderful mentors were celebrated with a luncheon held in their honor on May 13th at the High School Commons. A big thank you to the cafeteria staff for preparing a special meal for us and to Phyllis Almond for providing a delicious dessert.
Our annual luncheon is a time to let our 46 mentors know how much they are loved and appreciated.
The Mason tennis program continued its historical sweep of state playoffs last week when they traveled to College Station for the finals playoffs. Coach Paul Smith has been in Austin with his wife, Michele, while they help with the recuperation of their daughter, Ellie, and was unable to provide a full detail of all the state play; but, that article, and the individual photos of the winners, will be in next week’s issue.
Another fun and exciting regular season of baseball and softball is almost in the books. We will hold our closing ceremonies at the ballpark this Thursday, 5/26 at 6:30 pm. Please come out and support our youth.
A special appreciation to all of our young baseball/softball players, parents, coaches and umpires for their commitment that enabled Mason to have another great season.
With the threat of bad weather, Mason Jr High golfers competed well in the second Mason Jr High Open. Because of STAAR testing last week, no schools wanted to host a tournament, so we did. Brady, Ingram and Brownwood joined us on Friday for a second go round.
The Purple Puncher’s placed Second with Kyle Montoya finishing with 3rd place honors and Aaron Reardon placing 4th.

The Jr. High Punchers and Cowgirls traveled to Kingsland last Monday and competed in an upper classification golf tournament. The golf tournament was hosted by Burnet Jr High School. Schools that were represented ranked from 2A to 5A. The Punchers and Cowgirls represented our school well.
The Purple Punchers placed 5th and the White Punchers placed 13th.
We had 18 youth baseball players participate in a baseball clinic on Saturday, April 23rd. It was a fun event with a focused effort on batting technique.
The boys also spent some time on fielding drills and a few were able to get on the mound and display their pitching skills.

At Region competition on April 21 in Corpus Christi, with ranks of 1,1,1 from the judges, the Mason One Act company earned the right to compete at the 90th UIL ONE ACT PLAY STATE CONTEST in Austin. Jackson Taylor was presented BEST ACTOR, Sara Powell and Pete Rochat earned All Star Cast and Steeley Smith and Kade Willimack were awarded Honorable Mention.
As another successful year of FFA is drawing to a close, the Mason Chapter Officers will be holding the annual FFA banquet on Thursday, May 12, in the school cafeteria. Admission is free and Fajitas will be served starting at 5:30 P.M. and the banquet will begin at 6:00.
Everyone is welcome to attend and recognize the hard work and numerous achievements FFA students have accomplished throughout the year.
