The Mason High School Pioneers, including Brooke Wheelock, Chet Weitz, Ethan Powell, Raegan Glentz, Sloan Townsend, and their teacher, Megan Bierschwale, are in the process of implementing a beneficial water conservation system to help our school, community, and aquifer. Our mission is to harvest rainwater in a large storage tank, which would be located near the junior high gym.
Twenty-one players and alternates travelled to College Station last Thursday and Friday to compete at the UIL State Tennis Championships. Mason was represented in all five divisions and captured gold medals in four and brought home medals in all five. Mason captured gold in every division except the ever tough boy’s singles.
The Mason Puncher baseball team finally concluded their season last weekend. In the regional quarterfinal championship last weekend, the Punchers had a difficult time handling the Refugio Bobcats. In the first game the Punchers kept it close at 2-3 through 5 innings. Shortly after, the Bobcats would get 6 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning and ultimately won 2-9. In the second game the Punchers jumped out ahead in the bottom of the 1st 2-0.
The MHS Pioneers students have been planning and working on a water conservation project where a Rainwater Harvesting System will be implemented to collect rainwater from the junior high gym for use in irrigating the band practice field. The students have made a presentation to our local Lion’s Club and they also did a community wide presentation on May 24th. They will be presenting to the Hickory Underground Water District during the summer and the Riata Service Organization in the fall.
On Saturday, May 20th approximately 800 students in grades 4-12 competed in the TCEA STATE Robotics Contest, held at Hutto High School. Students competed in two different parts of the contest: Arena or Inventions. Mason Junior High qualified with one team at the Area TCEA Robotics contest. The team participated in Inventions, a more open-ended contest allowing students to present ideas in applied problem-solving. State golf was a little different this year. Not only was it held later into May but boys and girls were split over a period of one week. This made it easier on the golf course staff as well as the coaches. In the past, both boys and girls played on the same day at the same time.
Summer Reading Activities Schedule Read to Swim is on Mondays-Thursdays, 1:00-2:00 p.m. Read with a Dog is on Mondays, 10:00-11:00 a.m. June 5—Read to Swim and Read with a Dog begin June 12—Storyteller Consuela Samarripa will entertain in place of Read to Swim—attendees will receive a swim pass June 13—Expository Writing Workshop for grades 4 & 7, 10:00-12:00 Read to Swim will still be held June 19—Polka music & dance program—1:00-2:00 p.m.
Elijah Dickinson, 2014 Mason High School graduate, has been named to the Tarleton University Scholastic Honors Dean's List for the Spring 2017 semester. The Scholastic Honor Dean's List is one of the highest honors Tarleton State University confers on its students. It is the University's way of honoring a student's academic achievements and recognizing their importance on campus. Dickinson is the grandson of Larry & Sheila Kemp of Mason.
The Youth Agricultural Lifetime Leadership opportunity is a 6 day exploration for youth in 4-H Districts 7,10,11 & 12 to experience South Texas agricultural production. Youth that have a strong interest in production agriculture who are outgoing high school freshmen through outgoing seniors or ages 15—18 as of September 1, 2015 are invited to apply and 30 youth will be selected.
The National FFA Organization awarded a $1,000.00 Chevy Trucks scholarship to Steeley Smith of the Mason FFA. The scholarship is sponsored by Bob Price Chevrolet Buick GMC. Smith plans to use the funds to pursue a degree at Texas Tech University. The scholarship is one of 1,888 awarded through the National FFA Organization's scholarship program this year.
