May is here but it feels like July. The leaf raking party continues. It is going slower now. It gets too hot to do much in the afternoon. Hopefully this is the last week. I couldn’t have done this without grandson, John. He is getting to be a pro at loading leaves, and he loves to gather them with the leaf rake.

Uncle Mort and Horse Sense...
Horse sense--my 104-year-old Uncle Mort maintains--is much more than stable thinking. As a charter member of the “spit and whittle club” at the general store in the thicket, they weigh the world’s weightiest problems, often with wild abandon.
If only two geezers show up, arguments are common, but not much is settled.
Some will, some won’t, I might! However, I’ve gotten really good at the “Don’t want ‘a!” If it doesn’t need doing right now, it doesn’t get done. Oh, eventually it will get done, but on my time table and not someone else’s! As long as we’ve got clean clothes and underwear, then it’s just fine with me.
I used to not be like this.

My U.S. Marshall friend recently posted a question on Facebook, asking what the best western movie ever made was. A few people had offered replies by the time I saw the post, and all of them were wrong. The answer, of course, is Lonesome Dove. Some claimed Tombstone, which is a great western movie, and the closest second to Lonesome Dove there is.

Add Everything Together - It's a Tidal Wave....
During the last few weeks, I've been keeping the calendar apps on my phone, tablet and pc working overtime. There are pictures of the seniors to be taken, meeting with my confirmand, visits to make for the golf tournament, shopping for groceries, cooking and delivering soup, editing biographies, adjusting portraits....
Come to think of it, it's the same jumble of appointments, meetings, errands and sundry items we all have on our ...
"Can I Get an Amen!?"
In the course of my life, I've had to stand up in front of people and talk on many occasions. It all began years ago in Carlene Brollier's 5th grade class, and she laid the groundwork for a lifetime of public speaking.
Following her, I had Glendene Underwood, then Billie Phillips.
Leg-Pulling Long Gone...
Back in the 20th century, kids--as well as adults who sometimes acted like them--seemed destined to “make their own fun.” Not too much in the way of “time-passing” was in play if it cost anything, thus fertile minds were often in “creative mode,” if only in the sharing of jokes and stories.
Many times conversations began with, “Did you hear the one about...?” Sadly, these words rarely are heard anymore.
My old daddy could tell stories wi ...
Television commercials really stomp on my nerves and intelligence. Some, I have no idea as to what they are selling. Some, silly and some, just down right stupid. Like, who wears a gown to pour Clorox? That’s just stupid. Too, who Swiffers wearing three inch heels?
I change channels to the cooking shows during commercials.
The Israelites
Like many Americans, I miss my old college days. It’s been almost three weeks since I graduated from Harding. I remember the day I graduated like it was less than three weeks ago. And right after the ceremony someone came up to me and asked what I’m going to do now.
It’s coming next week! Summer Reading begins! Read with a Dog will be on Mondays beginning Monday, June 5th from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Students should be here no later than 10:30 a.m. so that they can finish their 30 minutes on time. Read to Swim will on Mondays through Thursdays from 1:00-2:00 p.m.

Dear Gerry:
I had a visit with Vickie Enrique, the commissioner with “one day’s experience” representing District 4. I asked her how she prepared herself before taking her seat on the Commission. She told me that she had spent considerable time researching the matter of the Mitigation Plan and had many visits and conversations with a lot of people in her district.
Weekend at the Colonial
Last weekend, Sean Reardon, his son, Aaron and I headed up to Fort Worth. We were guests of Dr. Steve Cole from Aledo and his brother, Michael, from Dallas.
The reason for the weekend getaway was to attend the Colonial Golf Tournament, which had started on Thursday; but, would be finishing up play on Saturday and Sunday.
A tiny egg.
Sign of Spring.
Life.
Hope springing eternal.
Newborn birds.
In the nest.
Out of the nest.
Some in their eggs.
Some wailing for worms.
Like those at the Odeon Theatre.
And some who don’t make it.
A tiny broken egg.
Bird unformed.
Too soon.
No hope.
No wings.
No flight.
No feathers.
And so, Spring passes it by.
No second chances.
None for the baby bird, either.
Fallen from the bough.
Perfect beak.
Bulging eyes.
Feathered wings.
No airlift.
Too weak to fly.
Spring passes it by.
No s ...
School will be out in days. I am not sure I am prepared for a summer with grandkids. Really, they are not prepared to do the Grandma jobs I dream up on a regular basis. This should be a fun few months. I have marked the calendar for the first days of preschool activities in August.
Memorial Day is May 29th.
Myrtle’s Agarita Jelly
I love this time of year! The weather is warmer, the days are longer and everyone seems to cheerier with winter being over. Spending time with friends and family at the river or lake, outdoor cook outs, these activities I really look forward to and they bring back a lot of good memories.
Something else that brings back fond memories this time of year is when I see Agarita bushes loaded with Agarita berries.
‘Fake News’ Back When?...
Sometimes, a random thought crosses my mind (admittedly, it’s usually a rough crossing), and there’s no guarantee of safe arrival to the other side. Such thoughts often bob up and down like a fishing line cork that’s way too big, thus giving a six-year-old fisherperson mixed signals as to whether the time has come to “land” a four-inch perch.
One thing for sure is that Oklahoma roads are not what we have here in Texas. Folks in Oklahoma are friendly, perhaps they are transplants from Texas. But, was honored to get to go and see my Lady Bug Graduate! They had fifty-five Valedictorians and proud to say she was one of them.
The gown still fits
For the past few years I’ve had my nose to the grindstone, my ear to the ground, and my hand to the plow, busily striking while the iron was hot. Which is a difficult position to work in, but it was necessary, since I decided a while back to return to college.
City Action
I was taken back by the lock-step response by three of the five City Commissioners to rescind a previously approved Hazard Mitigation Plan at last Monday's city commissioners meeting. Commissioners Sue Pledger, Bonnie Beam and the newly elected commissioner, Vickie Enrique, took it upon themselves to discount the information presented by Mickey Reynolds of the Texas Colorado River Floodplain Coalition (TCRFC) and the hundreds of hours the City Staff have spent outli ...
Votes
The vote that is hard to believe
The bottom line is that we have two commissioners who have served on the Mason City Commission for about a year each and one commissioner with one day’s experience. When these three commissioners voted to rescind the approved Hazard Mitigation Plan at the last city commissioners meeting they deprived the city staff of additional tools, data and funds to protect me, my neighbors and friends.
Last week was Children’s Book Week, the annual celebration of books for young people and the joy of reading.
Established in 1919, Children’s Book Week is the longest-running national literacy initiative in the country. To celebrate, we’ve added new easy books and new non-fiction easy books to our children’s collection. We hope you’ll read with your children and bring them in so that they can choose their own books sometimes.
Two.
What a strange little word.
Born out of German zwei.
And Old English twa.
And the Latin duo.
Which means “two.”
So says trusty Webster.
You...and you too.
Equals two.
One more than one.
But both are only one syllable.
Not that there’s anything wrong with one.
The lone wolf.
A solitary oak.
One roadrunner.
Always just one.
Or the sun.
Imagine having two.
One is the number expressing unity.
Forming a whole.
Undivided.
But it can’t be divided evenly.
It takes one to get to two.
There
I hope you had a great Mother’s Day weekend. We celebrated at our house on Sunday. We don’t do elaborate gifts but it was great to have Sunday lunch prepared for me by daughter Tina and granddaughter Amber. It was delicious.
It is officially reunion season. I was putting dates on the calendar.
Smothered Chicken Casserole
When you have had one of those days or one of those weeks that you need something to make your life easier this one-dish chicken casserole will make your day. It is also a great dish when you have company over or need something to take to a friend’s house.
1 tablespoon oil
4 boneless skinless chicken thighs
½ teaspoon garlic salt
¼ teaspoon pepper
6 oz.
Countdown to Greatness...
Folks given to dreaming some 500 years ago could never have imagined the many dozens of major historical occurrences linked to Galveston Island from then until now. Keep in mind that many historians believe the island was discovered in 1519, so it’s time to begin planning celebrations for the coastal playground with the 500th anniversary at hand.
A major milestone in September, 2018, will be a welcome prelude to the celebration.
Z and I will be heading to Oklahoma this week to see Lady Bug graduate from High School. Seems only yesterday she was a little bitty girl. Seeing as she’s my only granddaughter, I had a vision of dresses, dolls and girlie things. However, she just wanted to be like her boy cousins and play with Tonka Trucks and wear jeans!
The first solo visit here in Mason, I got cookie dough and envisioned a Norman Rockwell moment of us in the kitchen baking cookies.
Spare the rod, spoil the professor
Society may not be worth saving. Not that this is any surprise, if you’ve followed the news lately. Things have been going south on a greased pole for some time, and it’s your fault, if you spanked your kids when they were kids. According to a new study.
Spanking (or whupping, as it was called when I was a young ‘un) used to be an acceptable way for parents to punish disobedient children, and correct their behavior.
This week is National Police Week, and Monday was Police Officer’s Memorial Day, which honors and remembers police officers who gave their lives while on duty. As you may know, the past couple of years have been very dangerous for officers. This week is especially significant for Craig and me because our son is a patrol officer in his fifteenth year of service.
Opinions
Gerry, your May 10 Editorial you state “It’s important to remember that columnists are not necessarily news reporters. They are writers with a viewpoint that is their own, and you may or may not agree with their conclusions.”
You are implying that “trained” news reporters factually report and don’t input any of their own ideas.
Mocking
Dear Jerry:
At tonight’s Commissioner’s meeting I attempted to relate an avenue that the city might look at to purchase certain materials through government surplus and/or corporation surplus. The idea came from Dave Davidson’s comments regarding such purchases.
I was laughed at by the Commissioner representing District 1. I took exception to being laughed at and had some things to say about it.
For some time some now, Isaiah 1:18 has been in my mind regarding how ...
Emerald.
Esperanza.
English or Spanish, May is here.
Mayo e aqui.
Green as an emerald.
Thanks to the mighty rain.
It paints the entire county.
And in every shade of green at that.
The official May flower is blooming too.
Lily of the Valley.
Lilies DeValle.
As are a plethora of others.
May is not just full of promise.
It IS the promise.
Of new life.
And rebirth.
The joyful Gaillardia.
And perky Spiderwort.
The hawk.
The doves.
Mourning.
White-winged.
And Inca.
The glimpse of a Summer Tanager.

Class Meetings continue on Tuesday evenings at the Art United Methodist Church Parsonage at 6:00 for soup and 6:30 for the meeting.
Mother’s Day is Sunday.
