FIDDLIN’ AROUND IN BLANCO
In life you learn that there are certain perfect pairings – macaroni and cheese, Holmes and Watson, and now the Festival of Texas Fiddling and Twin Sisters Dance Hall is added to the list. Historic Twin Sisters Dance Hall welcomed the music, laughter and dancing of the 5th annual Festival of Texas Fiddling. The event was a celebration of the diversity of Texas fiddling.
The City of Blanco on Friday issued a notice saying that it has received many complaints about dogs running at large or dogs charging people in a large area of the city. Dogs running at large is in violation of city ordinance 2019-005, which says dogs are prohibited from running at large.
Blanco is a community full of people who want to help others, and during the holidays it’s even more apparent. At least three different Angel Trees in town are devoted to making sure the young and the old alike get the Christmas gifts they want and need this year. For the young Blanco High School and Middle School each have Angel Tree programs.
Christine Anderson has recently been appointed to the Blanco Planning and Zoning board. Anderson might not be from Blanco, but she’s here to stay. She grew up near Boston and describes herself as a “transplanted Yankee.” She has really enjoyed life in Texas, but still visits her family back north. After moving to Blanco, Anderson decided to seek out volunteer work and Mayor Martha Herden suggested that she attend a P&Z meeting.
Amber Corder, project coordinator, called the Blanco Coalition Awareness, Prevention and Treatment of Substance Abuse (CoAPT) meeting to order on Dec. 4 at 11:32 a.m. The sticker shock campaign was discussed first. There have been several committee meetings to plan the campaign, which is designed to educate adults who might purchase alcohol legally and provide it to minors.
Judge Brett Bray called the Blanco County Commissioners Court meeting to order at 9 a.m. on Tuesday with all four commissioners present. Public comments were heard from D’Anne and Ken Welch. Both addressed the court about public participation during government meetings, which they felt was undermined. Mrs. Welch also expressed concerns on the way the tax dollars are spent and would like to see more money given to the emergency services in the county.
Members of the Blanco FFA Chapter traveled to Huntsville, Friday, Dec.6, to compete in Texas FFA’s Leadership Career Development Events. Blanco’s Senior FFA Creed Speaker Malinda Campbell qualified for the state competition by finishing first or second in one of the state’s 66 district competitions and first or second in one of twelve area competitions.
Panther football moves from DII to DI in Class 3A reclassification
The University Interscholastic League announced the cutoff numbers for reclassification and realignment for all schools in Class 1A through 6A that participate in any UIL activity, and Blanco will remain a Class 3A school. The numbers were released by the UIL on Dec. 3. These numbers will determine classifications and alignments for school years 2020-2021 and 2021-2022. The Panther basketball team beat the Navarro Panthers 67-51 Tuesday, Dec. 3, and posted a 2-2 record in the Marion tournament. On Friday, Dec. 6, Blanco fell to the San Antonio Christian Lions, 59-47, in its opening game of tournament play. The Panthers lost to the Canyon Lake Hawks, 51-50, in their second game Friday.
The Lady Panther basketball team started the week strong with a 43-31 win against the San Marcos Home School Panthers Tuesday, Dec. 3. However, competition was tough in the Harper Tournament as they posted a 1-3 record there. Beginning Thursday, Dec. 5, Blanco dropped 63-34 game to the host team, the Harper Lady Horns.
At the age of 94, A loving wife, mother, grandmother, friend, our beloved Louise Haley (Fries) Pesek, left this earth for her heavenly home on Dec. 2, 2019. Louise Haley was born Sept. 17, 1925, in Sandy, Texas to James August and Zora Etta (Dildine) Haley, one of seven children. Louise grew up in Johnson City and graduated from Johnson City High School.
