On Friday night, the weather might not have been obliging, but that did not stop dyed-in-the-wool Christmas lovers in Blanco from making it to the courthouse lighting. Everything was simply moved indoors to the upper floor of the Old Blanco Courthouse. The Old Courthouse is a beautiful and historic part of Blanco; so, it is always a treat to have any excuse to go in for a visit.
The City of Blanco is updating its Comprehensive Master Plan. The Comprehensive Master Plan is the basis upon which the UDC (Unified Development Code) and city ordinances are based. The present plan was written in 2005 and a lot has happened in the community since then. A committee composed of a city council member, a member of the planning and zoning commission and a long-time resident of Blanco are hard at work updating the plan, which guides the growth and development of the city.
Judge Brett Bray opened the Blanco County Commissioners Court on Nov. 26 at 9:03 a.m. with all four commissioners present. The public comments were heard after the pledge of allegiance. Terry Casparis addressed the court on item 11 on the agenda which is regarding the construction of U.S. Hwy. 281. He urged the commissioners to be candid and strong with a resolution. Kenneth Welch spoke next on the same item and told the court to look at the facts before passing a resolution.
The Blanco County Community Choir has served the communities of the county through song since 1975, and will do so again this year. The choir’s Christmas programs will be held on Friday, Dec. 6, at Community Church of the Hills in Johnson City at 8 p.m. The Blanco performance will be on Sunday, Dec.
Susan Moore grew up in a small town in Indiana, but considers Texas home now. She has a background in business and worked as a controller, which is an individual who has responsibility for all accounting-related activities, for several corporations. These positions involved problem solving. At one corporation, Moore was able to strengthen accounting procedures and communication between the staff in order to finish the annual audit faster.
Bring a shopping bag and your dancing boots for the first German Christmas Market, or Weihnachtsmarkt, at the Twin Sisters Dance Hall this weekend. “Because Twin Sisters was built by German immigrants, we thought it would be fun to celebrate Christmas with a German twist,” said Jessi Haas-Snow, fundraiser chairwoman and volunteer.
Even at the peak of the season with a busy schedule, Santa Claus was kind enough to grant an exclusive interview to the Blanco County News for our readers. We caught a direct flight to the North Pole for an interview this important. As the plane approached, we could see the North Pole and Santa’s Castle glistening in the snow. Upon arrival, an elf named Fred took us on a brief tour of the North Pole facility.
The 2019-20 Lady Panther basketball season is underway. The team played its first game Tuesday, Nov. 19, and with three games since, now holds a 2-2 record. The 2018-19 team advanced to the Bi-District round of playoffs and finished the season with a 15-10 record. When asked how he feels about the season after seeing the team play, Coach Matt Karnes responded, “I feel like we have a chance to be really good.
The Panther basketball season is here. The first game was played Nov. 19 against the Canyon Lake Hawks. Blanco took a win over the Hawks, but lost to Stacey and St. Anthony in the next games to currently hold a 1-2 record. Since seeing the team play Coach Juston Weldon said, “I think we have a solid group of hard working kids that practice hard and want to win, and I feel good about the season moving forward.” Weldon believes all of his team’s players are players to watch. “Ever ...
The Lady Panther basketball team tallied two wins this past week before the Thanksgiving break with a 47-39 victory against the Yoakum Bulldogs Tuesday, Nov. 26 and 52-40 win over the Wimberley Texans Monday, Nov. 25. The Bulldogs took an early lead 15-12 at the end of the first quarter. Scoring was scarce for both teams in the second quarter with Blanco making six points to Yoakum’s five.
The Panther basketball team lost to the St. Anthony Yellow Jackets 62-53 Tuesday, Nov.. 26, and fell to the Stacey Eagles, 62-42, on Monday, Nov. 25. The Panthers are 1-2 on the season. Against the Yellow Jackets, the Panthers had a low-scoring first half, with St. Anthony leading 10-4 at the end of the first quarter and 25-14 at the half.
Ferne Shepard Strauss, 94, died on Nov. 26, 2019, at The Henry House in Blanco, Texas. She was born to J.C. and Mary Shepard of Wicks, Arkansas on Nov. 21, 1925. After graduating high school, she took a job with Western Union. At 17 years old, she boarded a train and went to Raymondville, Texas.
Ada Franke Cooley of Blanco passed away Dec. 2, 2019 at the age of 100. Ada was a member of the Blanco United Methodist Church, The Blanco – Spring Branch Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Ground Observers Corp During World War II in which she earned her wings. Ada was born to Bernhardt “Ben” and Ella Nickel Franke on March 28, 1919.
