Former Blanco Mayor Martha Herden continues to spread cheer around the community with her “care bears.” Three bears were presented to the first responders of Blanco County Emergency Services Districts 1 and 2 and the Blanco Police Department. She wanted to show her appreciation to the first responders.
It’s that time of year again! Blanco County will be holding its countywide Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event on Sept. 26 from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. or until the collection capacity has been met.
Bring your hazardous waste to the county drop off location, the Blanco County/Waste Connections Transfer Station at 377 Transfer Road in Johnson City.
The Blanco Lion’s Club hosts a “Stuff the Bus” campaign each year for citizens to raise money and collect school supplies for underprivileged students at Blanco ISD schools. Underprivileged at-home-learners will be included in the distribution.

Dr. April Samson of the Selah Bamberger Ranch Preserve was the guest speaker at the Sept. 8 meeting of the Rotary Club of Blanco County.
The preserve is located in Blanco County and is one of the best examples of private land preservation and ecological restoration. Samson, who serves as the executive director at the preserve, explained all the work and educational programs that are done there.

Amongst all this turmoil going on in our country, it is easy to forget about our youth. School ended suddenly and without warning in the Spring, and with that went all the extracurricular activities our children enjoyed. They were not able to socialize with their friends for the Summer as they normally would have done.
Mayor Pro Tem Martin Sauceda opened the Sept. 8 Blanco City Council meeting at 6:03 p.m. with all council members present. There were no announcements or public comments at this time.
Council member Mike Smith moved to approve the minutes from the previous meetings and Council member Keith McClellan seconded. The motion carried.

Garrett Granberg, a Blanco High School graduate, was one of eight inductees named to the Wheaton College athletics hall of honor for 2020. The announcement was made Thursday.
Granberg was an All-American selection at running back by D3football.com as a senior in 2004, helping lead the Thunder to a CCIW Championship in 2004.

The Blanco football team made the three plus hour drive east to Anderson to take on the Anderson-Shiro Fighting Owls. The Panthers used solid defense to defeat the Owls 34-9.
The game was low-scoring early, tied 7-7 with a minute remaining in the second quarter. Baylor Smith scored the Panthers’ first touchdown with the PAT kick by Nathan Tomlinson.
When much of the world is just pouring their first cup of coffee, the Blanco cross country team is running its 6 a.m. practice route.
The runners started workouts the first week of August and ran in their first meet in Harper Thursday, Sept. 10. The Panthers competed against teams from Kerrville Tivy, Fredericksburg and Llano.

The Lady Panther varsity volleyball team tallied one win and one loss this past week.
Blanco shut out the Bandera Bulldogs 3-0 on Sept. 8, with set scores of 25-17, 25-21 and 25-20. The Schulenburg Lady Horns’ ended the Lady Panthers’ seven-match winning streak on Friday with a 3-1 win. Set scores were 25-22, 14-25, 26-24 and 25-20.
Against the Bulldogs, Emilee LaRue led the team with nine kills and three digs.
The Blanco junior varsity football team fell 36-12 last Wednesday to the Columbus Cardinals.
The Cardinals struck first with a touchdown, but the extra point attempt was no good. The Panthers scored on a quarterback keeper by Cameron Anderson. The extra point attempt was no good and the game was tied 6-6 with 2:34 remaining in the first quarter.

The Blanco 8th grade football team fell 12-0 to the Jourdan Indians last Thursday.
The Indians scored a touchdown on their opening drive, but missed the two-point conversion attempt. Jourdanton led 6-0 with seven minutes remaining in the first quarter.
Blanco was forced to put on its first possession, but then held firm on defense, forcing Jourdanton to turn the ball over on downs.
The Blanco 7th grade football team beat the Jourdanton Indians 30-14 Thursday, Sept. 10.
After fumbling to ends its first drive deep in Jourdanton territory, Blanco was successful on its second possession, capping the drive with a touchdown pass from Diego Soto to Trey Atchley. Soto connected with Foster Capshaw for the two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead with 4:43 left in the first quarter.

Charles “Charlie” Ralph Cummings passed away on Aug. 26, 2020 at the Methodist Hospital in San Antonio at the age of 80.
Charlie was born in Greenfield, Ohio, on Sept. 15 in 1939, where he married Barbara Groppenbacher in 1958 and started a dairy operation.
In the early ‘60s Charlie was a businessman in Garden City, Kansas, and continued his business career in Blanco until his passing.
Patrick Henry Corder, 71, passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by family and friends, on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2020, after being diagnosed with cancer in early June.
