The Blanco County Commissioners set the tax rate and adopted a budget at their meeting Tuesday morning. The commissioners unanimously set the tax rate ate $0.3900 per $100 in valuation. Maintenance and operations was set at $0.3425 and debt services was set at $0.0475. The tax increase for the coming fiscal year is $970,999, an 11.7 percent increase from the previous fiscal year.
It was arguably America’s most tragic war--pitting countrymen against each other--and it all happened just a few generations ago. One Blanco man, who is a National Park Ranger, spends his downtime researching Texas during Civil War so that he can bring history back to life with his books. “My books are about the soldiers’ memories of battles and camp-life; Each soldier in my books has written a fascinating account of the battles they were in,” said author Joe Owen.

Two long standing Texas banks, Hondo National Bank and Community National Bank will join to become TXN Bank, N.A. (Texan Bank). As announced in August of 2020, Texas Heritage Bancshares Inc, parent company of Hondo National Bank and Medina Community Bancshares Inc., parent company of Community National Bank, consolidated into the Texas Heritage Bancshares Inc.
September 2021: This spring and summer (2021) have been different than previous seasons, the extra moisture has been good for our landscape and gardens. One of the favorite nursery sayings is “Fall is for Planting”. In the garden and flower bed planting areas, spread compost, fertilizer and mulch. If the area hasn’t been tilled, take a garden fork and break up the planting area.
In the fall of 1981, there was a group of 20 young men, that were gritty, resilient, talented, and determined to be the best Blanco Panther football team to ever step foot on this field. This team was never scored against in a district game and could hold their opponent on the goal line for four downs and not let them score.
Blanco made the best of its home-opener Friday with a 40-0 shutout win against Anderson-Shiro It was all Panthers from the beginning. Joe Lopez sped downfield on the opening kickoff to stop the return on the Owls’ 10-yard line. The defense was stingy, forcing the Owls to punt on fourth down.
Blanco improved to 17-6 with a win against Junction last week. Stats were unavailable at press time, but will be updated in next week’s paper. The Lady Panthers play away games this Friday, Sept. 17 at the Geneva School of Boerne and Tuesday, Sept. 21 at Fredericksburg. Blanco begins its District 3A-25 schedule at home against Lago Vista Friday, Sept.
The Blanco cross country team competed in the Harper cross country meet Saturday, Sept. 11. Every Blanco runner improved their previous best time of the season. Kylene Kramer placed 19th with a time of 13:44. Evelyn Trammell was 25th with 14:08. Sidney Johnson was 34th in 14:40. Addy Olinick placed 42nd with 15:13.
David Blackburn, 71, passed away at Christus Santa Rosa on Sunday, Sept. 5, 2021. David was born on July 27, 1950 in Blanco, to Bill and Maxine Blackburn. David worked over 50 years perfecting his craft in the masonry field to become one of the best masons in the Hill Country.
Robert James Mayo (Bob, OG, Grandpa, Pops), age 79, of Blanco, passed away Friday, Sept. 10, 2021. He was born in San Antonio. Robert was a graduate of Harlindale High School and served in the military. He was the best cook ever. If anyone knew him, they knew him for his enchiladas.
Mass of Christian Burial for Donald ‘Don’ Ray Boumans was held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 4, in the St. Martins Catholic Church, 1815 St. Martins Street, Lecompte, Louisiana with Father Marc Noel officiating. Don, 25, of Blanco, entered eternal rest on Saturday, Aug. 28, in Blanco. He was born Sept.
