Leo Osterhout celebrated his 100th birthday on Friday, Sept. 17. He is a resident of Henry House in Blanco and was joined in the celebration by his son, Danny Osterhout, who is also pictured. He was born in Independence, Kansas, a century ago. Osterhout is a veteran of World War II, joining the Navy in January 1942, soon after the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Pinot grigio and ale might have been a factor in the homicide of a local Army veteran and former Blanco firefighter last month, according to police in an arrest affidavit that was obtained by the Blanco County News. James “Jim” Mayer Harris Jr., 63, a Blanco attorney, allegedly shot and killed his 25-year-old stepson, Donald Boumans, after an altercation on Aug.
The Blanco Classic Car Show took place on Saturday at the Blanco State Park. With no chance of rain and blue skies above it was a great day for the car show. The annual event didn’t take place in 2019 or even this year in May, which is the month when the show is regularly scheduled, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMTs and military veterans from across Blanco County will parade past St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, 218 Pittsburg in Blanco, at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 29. The event is for a special blessing in celebration of St. Michael, the patron saint of first responders and the military. The day coincides with the Feast Day of St.
On Sunday, the rebuilt sign welcoming visitors to Blanco County and proclaiming it the home of President Lyndon B. Johnson was installed at the intersection of RR165 and RR2325. On hand at the installation on Sunday were Bernard Mollberg, local coordinator and facilitator of the project; Art Brooks, master carpenter; and Adrian Landon Brooks, the muralist who painted the sign. “We have been delighted with the local support of this project,” Mollberg said.
After a year’s hiatus due to COVID-19 concerns, the annual Twin Sisters Dance Hall “Raise the Roof” event is set for this weekend. The annual event kicks off Friday with “Fiesta Friday.” The activities that day start at 3 p.m. when the grounds and vendors open. Vendors will be present throughout the day. The hall opens at 7 p.m.
The Blanco County unemployment rate continues to drop as it once again leads the nine-county Rural Capital Area. Blanco County’s unemployment rate for August was 3.3 percent, according to figures released Friday by the Texas Workforce Commission. The county’s rate has fallen 0.8 percent in the last two months. The unemployment rate was 4.1 percent in June and 3.7 percent in July. The nine-county region’s August unemployment rate was 3.9 percent, falling from 4.3 percent in July.
Blanco dropped a 28-18 decision last Friday in a road trip to Antonian. The Panthers fell to 1-3 with the loss, while the Apaches improved to 2-2 with the win. The Apaches used five pass plays and three rushing plays to move the ball steadily downfield. Threatening to score from the Blanco 20-yard line, Cody Cross grabbed an interception at the 3-yard line to stop the Antonian drive. The Blanco volleyball team improved to 19-6 overall with a 3-2 win against the San Antonio Saints home school team Monday, Sept. 13. The set scores were 17-25, 25-19, 23-25, 25-21 and 15-10. Senior outside hitter Emilee LaRue led the way offensively with 27 kills in the five-set match. Elin Kaiser had 16 kills, while Haleigh Charles added seven kills and Jennah Atchley chipped in with four.
Kylene Kramer finished ninth and picked up a medal to lead the Blanco cross country team Saturday at Ingram. Kramer finished ninth with a time of 14:16 for the Lady Panthers. Also for Blanco, Evelyn Trammell finished 12th in 14:34, Laci Creswell took 17th place in 15:11, and Sidney Johnson finished in 15:27 and took 22nd place. The Blanco junior varsity football team picked up a 22-13 win over Antonian Sept. 16 at Panther Stadium. The Apaches had the early advantage, going up 13-0. Blanco found the end zone on a scoring pass from Colby Murphree to Jess Whitehead. The Panthers trailed 13-6 at halftime. The Panthers executed a methodical drive on their first possession of the second half the ended on a Murphree touchdown run.
The Blanco Middle School seventh and eighth grade football teams picked up wins against Jarrell.
David Dean DuFner, 76 passed away on Sept. 1, 2021, was born on Nov. 11, 1945 to Hal and Ruth Dufner. After high school and marrying he worked on Diamond X Ranch for M. C. Winters drove truck for Winter Construction Co, worked for R. B. Felps Trailer Co., drove truck for many people hauling grain, cattle, grass, pipe, boats, and just about everything else, and ran his own landscape business.
