The meeting was called to order by the drug free community support grant project coordinator, Amber Newby. Newby updated the group on the action plan and budget changes to include the addition for the school resource officer (SRO). He/she will be able to help with the safety concerns as well as the initiatives and different things.
Former BHS Football Coach C.D. Kirchner, who served as head coach of the Blanco High School Panthers during the 1966 and 1967 seasons, passed away June 30, 2018. Obituary on page 3. Coach Kirchner was first introduced to parents, players and community members at the BHS Quarterback Club Friday, July 15, 1966, according to the Blanco County News.
There is a new health epidemic affecting our local teenagers. Ask any Blanco ISD teacher or school administrator and you will quickly learn about the high usage rates of electronic cigarettes or ‘vapes’ by our Blanco teens. Unfortunately, many teenagers seem to think that ‘vaping’ is safe compared to smoking traditional cigarettes.
Gabrielle Olivia Rose Salazar, daughter of Arnold and Christine Salazar, of Spring Branch recently graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) at Kings Point, NY. Salazar earned a Bachelor of Science degree and a commission in the U. S. armed forces.  She also earned a Merchant Marine officer license, qualifying her to serve as an officer on any ship in the U.S.
There are children in Blanco ISD, who for different reasons, start school without their needed supplies. This is your chance to help your community grow with pride. The Blanco Lions Club will sponsor a community drive effort to help the kids who will be starting school soon. On Saturday, August 11, the Blanco school Bus will be parked on the north side of the Old Blanco County Courthouse square from 9 a.m.
Almost anyone can canoe or kayak, and more Americans paddle than play soccer, according to Texas Parks and Wildlife. They recommend that if you want to see nature in a new way, get your paddle wet. Bring your canoe, kayak or boat (electric motors only) to the park. It’s a $5 park entrance fee for a day pass for anyone 13 years and older; children 12 years and under are free.
On Tuesday, June 19 children attending the Summer Reading Program at the Blanco Library made musical instruments from household items, such as, a tambourine made of paper plates, yarn, and jingle bells. Librarian Crystal Spybuck taught everyone to make a variety of instruments. She played a video of the musical performance group, Stomp, to demonstrate how common items can be used to make musical sounds.
Soccer registration for the fall league is going on now through July 31. The fee for registration is $95 for registration, and additional siblings for $85 each. If children are enrolling in both soccer and baseball, they receive a $25 discount $25. The Blanco Youth Soccer Association accepts children age four to 11 years. Many high school graduates will be leaving Blanco this fall to venture off to college, vocational schools, the military or to join the workforce. While leaving home for the first time can be very exciting for these new high school graduates, it can be worrisome for parents. Parents simply do not have as much control over their kids when move away.
