New LES principal believes in ‘people before paperwork’
Spend five minutes with Llano Elementary School Principal Doug DeBord, and you’ll soon realize that for him, it really is all about the kids. The 2016-17 school year will be his first as the head of LES, but he spent last year getting to know the students and faculty as the assistant principal. Having transferred from Fredricksburg, DeBord chose Llano because, “There is something to be said about the people of a small town.
District Attorney Wiley B. “Sonny” McAfee requested a Texas Attorney General opinion last week on several issues related to voting. McAfee, who represents Llano, Burnet, Blanco and San Saba counties, wrote to Attorney General Ken Paxton on Aug. 31. The three questions asked concerned the storage of an image of a ballot by electronic voting systems, the requirement of election judges to tally votes and return them to county elections officers, and what remedies are available if an elections ...
Talks began in March about bringing different types of entertainment to Llano, a meeting with a musical promoter out of Austin between the Llano Chamber of Commerce, the Llano Community Center Board, the Christmas Lighting Committee and the JLK Arena. What came out of that meeting was entertainment is expensive, but there was a void in Llano of a variety of entertainment options. Burnet and Marble Falls have Summer Lawn Concerts, and Cherokee has its music festival.
Before an event can begin, there has to be a vision, and in Llano those visionaries come from all walks of life. The “Fourth Friday Llano Art Walk” began as just that, a vision of Marcus Hammons and Valerie Smasal–Hammons earlier this year. The art walk happens the fourth Friday of the even months and has been a successful venture between local artists and shop owners.
First of all, I would like to thank everyone for welcoming me as the new City Manager for the City of Llano. I consider this a great honor and look forward to working with staff to lead the city forward. It is my goal to try to keep you informed of projects and activities as they take place so you can be prepared as these events may affect you. I also wanted to take a moment to update everyone on a couple of projects that will be taking place in the near future.
For most people, the mention of “knitting” brings up images of grandma sitting alone by a warm fire, knit-one-purl-two-ing to the rhythm of her rocking chair. For a group of Llano ladies, this sort of solitary needling couldn’t be farther from the truth. Seven years ago, Marilyn Hale and Sandy Shaw, both Llano locals, decided that while they enjoyed knitting, it would be a lot more fun with good company to enjoy it with. “We put up a few flyers,” Hale remembered, “and knitters ...
A talent for tumbling to the top - and winning medals in Houston
If you weren’t impressed with the gymnastics at the Olympics, you probably think the Wright Brothers weren’t doing much more than what school kids did when they tossed around folded paper before the teacher arrives. Keihana Palmares of Llano may not be ready for Tokyo in 2020, but she’s a dandy who brought back medals — that were not souvenirs — earned at a national AAU competition in Houston this summer. Keihana, of Llano, is 11 years-old.
A proposed fiscal year 2017 budget for the City of Llano will spend over $2 million less than the proposed budget a year ago if passed by the city council. Budget hearings are set for the Sept. 6 and Sept. 19 city council meetings. The proposed budget for the next fiscal year is expected to bring in over $4.2 million in revenue and spend just less than that amount.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton issued an opinion last Thursday on the Llano County vehicle policy. The opinion summary said that the county may only put into place vehicle policies for sheriff’s office vehicles that do not “unreasonably interfere with the sheriff’s constitutional or statutory duties.” The second part of the opinion dealt with the county auditor’s ability to access records on the use of county vehicles.
A vision that took place over six months ago became a reality on Saturday night at a sold out, packed, Lantex Theater. What started out as a typical morning at the Llano Chamber of Commerce in early February, ended with the possibility of a new event at the Lantex. Marilyn Russell, who has a “dual citizenship, one in Houston, the other in Llano” according to Vicki Christensen, called the chamber office and asked executive director, Briley Mitchell, if he had heard of an Eagles Tribute Band ...
