My U.S. Marshall friend recently posted a question on Facebook, asking what the best western movie ever made was. A few people had offered replies by the time I saw the post, and all of them were wrong. The answer, of course, is Lonesome Dove. Some claimed Tombstone, which is a great western movie, and the closest second to Lonesome Dove there is.
Some will, some won’t, I might! However, I’ve gotten really good at the “Don’t want ‘a!” If it doesn’t need doing right now, it doesn’t get done. Oh, eventually it will get done, but on my time table and not someone else’s! As long as we’ve got clean clothes and underwear, then it’s just fine with me.
I used to not be like this.
Uncle Mort and Horse Sense...
Horse sense--my 104-year-old Uncle Mort maintains--is much more than stable thinking. As a charter member of the “spit and whittle club” at the general store in the thicket, they weigh the world’s weightiest problems, often with wild abandon.
If only two geezers show up, arguments are common, but not much is settled.
For the past couple of months I have written about the City elections this spring, and this past Saturday was Election Day. In the two districts that were voting there were 206 votes, and I am pleased to say that Bonnie Beam will continue to represent District 2 and we will have a new commissioner in District 4, Vickie Enrique.
May is here but it feels like July. The leaf raking party continues. It is going slower now. It gets too hot to do much in the afternoon. Hopefully this is the last week. I couldn’t have done this without grandson, John. He is getting to be a pro at loading leaves, and he loves to gather them with the leaf rake.

Emerald.
Esperanza.
English or Spanish, May is here.

Lily of the Valley.
Lilies DeValle.
As are a plethora of others.
May is not just full of promise.
It IS the promise.
Of new life.
And rebirth.
The joyful Gaillardia.
And perky Spiderwort.
The hawk.
The doves.
Mourning.
White-winged.
And Inca.

Folks given to dreaming some 500 years ago could never have imagined the many dozens of major historical occurrences linked to Galveston Island from then until now. Keep in mind that many historians believe the island was discovered in 1519, so it’s time to begin planning celebrations for the coastal playground with the 500th anniversary at hand.
A major milestone in September, 2018, will be a welcome prelude to the celebration.

Two.
What a strange little word.
Born out of German zwei.
And Old English twa.
And the Latin duo.
Which means “two.”
So says trusty Webster.
You...and you too.
Equals two.
One more than one.
But both are only one syllable.
Not that there’s anything wrong with one.
The lone wolf.
A solitary oak.
One roadrunner.
Always just one.
Or the sun.
Imagine having two.
One is the number expressing unity.
Forming a whole.
Undivided.
But it can’t be divided evenly.
It takes one to get to two.

Votes
The vote that is hard to believe
The bottom line is that we have two commissioners who have served on the Mason City Commission for about a year each and one commissioner with one day’s experience. When these three commissioners voted to rescind the approved Hazard Mitigation Plan at the last city commissioners meeting they deprived the city staff of additional tools, data and funds to protect me, my neighbors and friends.
City Action
I was taken back by the lock-step response by three of the five City Commissioners to rescind a previously approved Hazard Mitigation Plan at last Monday's city commissioners meeting. Commissioners Sue Pledger, Bonnie Beam and the newly elected commissioner, Vickie Enrique, took it upon themselves to discount the information presented by Mickey Reynolds of the Texas Colorado River Floodplain Coalition (TCRFC) and the hundreds of hours the City Staff have spent outli ...

For the past few years I’ve had my nose to the grindstone, my ear to the ground, and my hand to the plow, busily striking while the iron was hot. Which is a difficult position to work in, but it was necessary, since I decided a while back to return to college.
