The Israelites
Like many Americans, I miss my old college days. It’s been almost three weeks since I graduated from Harding. I remember the day I graduated like it was less than three weeks ago. And right after the ceremony someone came up to me and asked what I’m going to do now.
Television commercials really stomp on my nerves and intelligence. Some, I have no idea as to what they are selling. Some, silly and some, just down right stupid. Like, who wears a gown to pour Clorox? That’s just stupid. Too, who Swiffers wearing three inch heels?
I change channels to the cooking shows during commercials.
Leg-Pulling Long Gone...
Back in the 20th century, kids--as well as adults who sometimes acted like them--seemed destined to “make their own fun.” Not too much in the way of “time-passing” was in play if it cost anything, thus fertile minds were often in “creative mode,” if only in the sharing of jokes and stories.
Many times conversations began with, “Did you hear the one about...?” Sadly, these words rarely are heard anymore.
My old daddy could tell stories wi ...

We celebrated a great Memorial Day weekend. Our air conditioner went out Saturday night. The weather was kind to us on Sunday with cloud cover and a shower. Hope Monday is as calm. I seriously thought of riding around in the car after lunch Sunday to cool off. However, I never had air conditioning until I was a junior in college and moved into an upper classman dorm.
Driving out to The Eckert James River Bat Cave Preserve on Sunday evening was almost like being in the middle of a fireworks display. Lightning flailed about in the sky like giant long- fingered hands trying to reach out and grab something. Rain hit in huge splats on the windshield, but I continued on out thinking that maybe the system was already past the Preserve.
Fine.
Be that way.
O very, merry month of May.
June’s right behind you.
Just waiting.
So go ahead.
Leave.
Not that anybody could stop you.
You sure didn’t last long.
In fact, you sped right by.
Or so it seems.
But you packed a wallop while you were here.
You brought rain.
And wind.
Thunder and lightning.
Hail.
Tons of wildflowers.
And 90-degree days.
You brought a ton of pollen too.
And allergies.
Asthma.
Pneumonia.
Bronchitis.
Nothing very merry about that.
Still, a month has to do what a ...

Reunion, Baptisms, Confirmations and a Funeral....
It is almost a certainty of life that we cannot control the timing or pace of events in that life. We may have long periods of quiet and ennui, followed by periods of mayhem and excitement. There will be the occasional periods of moderation and balance; but, they really do seem to be the exception, not the rule.
This last week was a perfect example.
