This past Sunday, Nov. 5th, the Mason Community once more came together and mixed up: Family, Fellowship, Food and Friends! St. Joseph Parishioners extend a big “Thank You” to everyone for their wonderful support of the Annual Mexican Dinner. It was a Super Success! Jane Vargas, Isabel Rivera and Letty Velez; plus, their Faithful Team of Workers either spent hours in the kitchen in order to serve another outstanding meal or spent hours in their own kitchen baking the delicious desserts. ...
Operation Orphans, Inc. hosted 43 girls on October 28th for the first of 4 hunts which will be held this season. The remaining hunt dates for this season will be boy’s hunts on November 18, December 2 and January 6. Since 1960, Operation Orphans, Inc. has had 18,517 kids participate. As one can imagine, things have changed a bit since it all began 58 years ago.
Jarrett Worrell, member of Mason County 4H recently exhibited his Hereford cattle at the American Royal in Kansas City, MO. Jarrett received the Southwest Region Show Heifer of the Year award for 2017, presented by the American Hereford Association. On October 31, Hill Country Memorial received its ninth consecutive “A” grade for excellence in patient safety from The Leapfrog Group, a national health care safety rating institution. Using publicly available data from the Leapfrog Hospital Survey and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses 30 measures to assign A through F grades to more than 2,600 U.S.
A hot, dry July and a wet August have led to increases in a natural fungus byproduct in some Texas corn. Despite the increase in fumonisin, or mycotoxin, in the Texas Panhandle, authorities say the food supply is safe. “For years there have been processes in place to ensure the food on our grocery store shelves is safe,” Shannon Worrell, Mason County Farm Bureau president, said.

16-year-old Clint Lane of Mason, won his class at the 2017 National Sporting Clays Association’s (NSCA) National Championship held last week at its World Headquarters in San Antonio, TX. Over 2020 entrants from most of the 50 US States, and 16 Foreign Countries did their best to capture the Association’s most coveted prize.
Third graders at Mason Elementary learned to think and plan about garden space in week three of their Learn, Grow, Eat and Go (LGEG) lesson. The students are gaining knowledge that will help them in planting a vegetable garden. The lesson title was “Don’t Crowd Me In.” Students participated in “paper towel gardening” with carrot seeds.

The fourth grade faculty and students at Mason Elementary would consider it a great pleasure if all of our Mason County veterans would join us for a luncheon on Friday, November 10th at the Mason Elementary Library beginning at 11:00 am. A short program will also follow in the MJH gym at 12:30 pm.
With only one district game remaining on their 2017 schedule, the Punchers increased their district record to 3-0, and their overall record to 9-0, defeating the Junction Eagles on Friday night 56-7. Friday night's game, like many this year, seemed heavily weighted to the first half of the game, with only 14 points scored in the second half of the game.
7th grade The 7th grade played well as they beat Junction 37-14. A couple of early big runs by Junction kept them in the game early but the 7th grade defense played lights out as they held them to only 2 scores. Scoring for the 7th grade Punchers were Isaiah Bishop with 4 touchdowns and a two-point conversion, Ivan Wofford with a touchdown pass and a 2 point conversion pass, Quince Lawler with touchdown reception from I.

Each winter from December through early March, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) stocks rainbow trout in more than 100 locations across Texas. This winter, Mason County will host one of these fishing opportunities at the James River Crossing on Highway 2389. This Mason County winter fishing opportunity will be called WinterFisch and will include two release dates of December 23rd, 2017 and January 27th, 2018.
Veterans Day this year will be celebrated with a Veterans Day Ceremony and Rifle Salute, sponsored by The American Legion Fort Mason Post #285 and VFW Post 8554 on Friday Nov. 10, 2017. The ceremony will take place at the Mason County Veterans Memorial on the Courthouse lawn, beginning at 10:30 AM and will include patriotic songs, recognition of currently serving military personnel and a 21-gun salute. Members of The American Legion Fort Mason Post 285 Ladies Auxiliary will be distributing memorial poppies on Friday, Nov. 10th, in observance of Veterans Day. The tradition of using the red poppy as the memorial flower for American war dead began in the years following World War I. Veterans returning to their homes here in America remembered the wild red poppies that grew on the devastated battlefields of France and at Flanders Field.

There will be a special showing of the movie Last Man Club at the Odeon Theater on Sunday, November 12th at 2:00 p.m. in honor of Vetrans Day. The movie brings together four old World War II veterans who find each other for one last mission together on a B-17 bomber, just like the one they flew in the war. One of the executive producers, Cowden Ward, is a good friend of Mason residents Tommy and Brenda Koepke. The movie is rated PG-13.

Jan McCann has loaned a very special quilt for display in the Stribling Room of the Mason Co. M. Beven Eckert Memorial Library. The quilt was made in 1889-1890, most likely as a wedding gift. The family was German and lived in what is now an historic village located in Columbus, Ohio.

Artisans Gallery, located at 117 North Live Oak, across from the Willow Creek parking lot will be having an open house on November 18, 2017 from 10am to 5 pm. The Gallery features local art and antiques and collectibles. They will be serving wine, food, refreshments and drawing for door prizes each hour of the day.

Eulene Johnson, of Mason, passed away on Wednesday, November 1, at the age of 94. Eulene was born in Toya, Texas, on April 18, 1923, to David Absalom Johnson and Mary Irene Anderson Johnson. She was raised in far West Texas and never lost her love for that part of the state.

Learning to Serve - Blue Ribbon Kids As I write this column, the students of Mason High School are NOT in their classrooms! Instead, they are washing windows! They are raking leaves!
