Tomorrow is Thanksgiving Day. The Pilgrims and Native Americans celebrated it in 1621, some 397 years ago. It became an official America holiday December 26, 1941, 77 years ago when President Roosevelt signed a Bill making it Federal Law. The spiritual discipline of giving thanks is best defined in I Thessalonians 5:16-18, “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” The operating words in this passage is ...
On the Countdown to 60 On Saturday, November 24th, I'll be turning 59 years old. While not considered a "milestone" birthday, it is notable, as it marks the end of my 50s standing on the precipice of 60. I plan on thoroughly enjoying my last year as a 50-something. My 50s have been a wonderful decade, and I've had so many incredible moments and experiences that I can only hope the 60s will be just as great.
Dear Mason: I was privileged to be a guest at the Veterans’ Day celebration at the school Monday, November 12th, hosted by the 4th grade. Letter to the Editor and Mason Readers, I look forward to the day when more members of our community remember the difference between informed opinion and inflammatory nonsense. Kim Paxson
Democrats! In response to last week’s unkind Letter to the Editor: Yes, Beto lost...for now. And so did his authentic, impassioned, people-powered, unite the country, equality for all, grass roots agenda...which judging from the close race and votes cast, was admired by a whole lot of Texans. So I thank him and his hard-working campaign for all their effort.

Intelligence offsets Martin Luther is credited with starting what is commonly known as the Reformation movement, 501 years ago. On 31 October 1517 Luther nailed his Ninety-five Theses to the door of the chapel in Wittenberg, Germany. Number 82 blasted the idea of ‘papal indulgences,’ in which people were allowed to pay money in order to gain forgiveness of sins, either their own sins or the sins of those who had already died, and were ostensibly suffering in purgatory.
Blessings at Thanksgiving… In 1940, novelist Thomas Wolfe’s best known work, published posthumously, made a strong claim in its title: You Can’t Go Home Again. During a 10-day November visit to Texas, now Kansan Ray Hildebrand proved him wrong. In effect, the composer of “Hey, Paula”--the number one popular song in the United States and free world early in 1963--took up where he left off more than 55 years ago.

Thank goodness. Thanksgiving. Thankfully it’s here. Thank you one and all. Thank yourself. Even if no one else does. Go ahead. Give yourself a pat on the back. Or a nice hug. No hubris implied. And for doing nothing. Just being. Giving. Receiving. Can’t have ...
