There is a fierce group of women in Mason who know how get things done and have a heart for helping others. Last year, they held an event at Restored Rocks called “Give and Gather” to raise awareness of the Mason Food Bank and collect non-perishable goods. The event was so successful that an extended-bed pick-up truck was filled to overflowing with canned goods for our local community. This year, this same group of women were joined by additional motivated ladies to host this year’s f ...

No Boredom, Or Inactivity, Allowed....
If there was a common lament for 2020, it would be that we're all exhausted of not being able to do anything. We didn't have graduation at the Puncherdome; we didn't have a Round Up parade; and, we didn't have a normal Wild Game Dinner. Or, just about anything else, with the notable exception of Friday night football! In April and May, we were in full lockdown.
We Veterans count our many blessing and the one that sticks is the admiration of the locals of the Western Hill Country of Texas to give us recognition, we pray, deserved. I have to start with our fund raising efforts which this year, of all years, has been a success. We have to give thanks for the cooperation of the employees of the Mason Feed Store, Mr.
A Sensible & Compassionate Anti-Covid Strategy
After reading Cheri Glasses letter in the November 25th edition of the Mason County News I was amazed that anyone living in Mason would suffer through a self imposed lockdown of such length due to fear of Covid-19. It’s true that this disease can be deadly, especially to older people with pre-existing conditions & many older people have pre-existing conditions.
There Is a Bomb in Goliad
"I was almost old enough to shave before I realized the hymn was not "There Is A Bomb In Goliad." That statement by a native Texas got me to thinking about all the garbled religious song titles I have heard about over the years. The oldest is undoubtedly the one about the child coming home from Sunday School and telling his mother he'd learned a new song about a bear, a cross-eyed bear named Gladly.
Left Over Mashed Potato Biscuits
What do you do with all the left over smashed potatoes that you have, particularly around the holiday season? Besides eating them every chance I get, I like to make biscuits with them. The recipe uses an entire cup, so it will begin to make a dent in your leftover spuds, and I’ll pretty much guarantee you that you will not have to make any room in the fridge for “leftover” biscuits! Ingredients: 1/2 stick salted butter, grated 3/4 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese, divided 2.5 cup ...
Stew Gets No Better…
Uncle Mort’s “throwaway” lines grow mountainous in trash heaps on his place back in the thicket. Some heard, though, are “keepers,” worthy of repeated consideration. When still in his 90s, he warned about paying the least bit of attention to kitchen recipes that have unrecognizable or multi-syllabic words, exotic wines or ingredients to be “folded in.” He also said upon sighting the words “foie de gras,” one should “duck” into simpler, less “uppity” recipes.
Mexican Chicken Lasagna
This dish is a different twist on lasagna. The sour cream and cheese give it a rich flavor your family or guests will want to devour! Whether you are tail-gating or going to your next church social, I think this will be a hit! I also think this dish would do well in the freezer. Ingredients: 1 Tablespoon canola oil 2 cups chunky salsa 2 cups shredded cooked chicken 1 cup sour cream 2 cups shredded cheddar 12 corn tortillas, halved 1 bag (14 ounces) Bird’s Eye Recipe Ready So ...
Time is flying as Christmas Day is getting closer. Our daughter Tina and granddaughter Amber decorated the tree last week. Great grandson Tanner likes to touch the ornaments to see if someone will notice and yell at him. The dog ate one ornament. I don’t think she found it to be tasty as there has not been another chewed up ornament found. In the midst of this strange year, our family has decided to purchase and give gifts.
Over 200 fishers and other celebrants came out for the 4th Annual WinterFisch Celebration on Saturday, December 5th to celebrate good times on the banks of the Llano River with an afternoon of trout fishing, fishing demos, and live music. The WinterFisch Celebration kicked off the three months long Rainbow trout fishing opportunity known as Mason County WinterFisch (WinterFisch).
We invite you to support “Operation Christmas Greeting”; Mason County’s annual fundraiser for the EMS Association. Thursday, December 17th, is the deadline to make your donation. “Greeting” accounts are set up at each of the three Mason banks.
I can almost hear the drums beat now. That echoing beat of the Mexican Danza drums will ring in Mason once again this Thursday, December 10, 2020. We invite you to witness the celebration to the adoration of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The annual celebration commemorating the historic apparition of our Lady to a newly converted native Nahua man named Juan Diego near the hill of Tepeyac, on December 9, 1531. This Thursday the celebration will be held at Mi Pueblo restaurant.
Laura Lewis is a local artist, having moved with her husband Don to their property in Mason County in 2011. For twenty plus years, Laura Lewis has been making paintings of west Texas. While some people can only think of what west Texas does not have, Laura has enjoyed making paintings that draw attention to the beauty and resources that abound there. After living on the plains for years, the brain becomes attuned to a horizontal format and Laura’s compositions reflect that influence.
Twelve years ago, we put out a special publication celebrating the 150th anniversary of the founding of Mason County. We worked closely with Kyle Martin who provided some incredible artwork and editing skills, and used a photo of unidentified Mason County road hands from the early 1900s. At least they were unidentified until Hal Reichenau was going through some old photos and found the same image, with the names of the men written on the back.
Look at all of these sweet faces that Second Chance Mason Animal Rescue took into their care and helped to find their forever home in 2020, that is 37 and the year is not quite over yet! 32 of these were rescued directly from the Mason City Pound. These animals were cared for by our wonderful volunteers until a good permanent home could be found.

When We Lose Weight, Where Does it Go?
Almost everyone knows (especially this time of year) that if we eat a lot of food, we will gain weight. The food we eat is converted into fat, which is stored in fat cells in our bodies. The more fat that is stored, the more weight we gain. If we want to lose weight, we have to eat less, and exercise more.
