At our last City Commission meeting a week ago, we had one special presentation as well as a large number of issues for discussion and several actions that were needed to keep moving forward to meet the needs of our community. There were two zoning issues that were approved, consideration of a new grant opportunity, updates on the permitting for the new landfill and a report on the water treatment facility that is being designed for Mason, and some discussion about the annual budget we are wo ...
BAT ROCKS....What are Bat Rocks? Bat Rocks are the brain storm of my sister, Cynthia. She had been following a fun trend that involved Mason youth painting and hiding rocks for others to find and re-hide or keep. Parents and children around Mason hide the rocks they had painted and snap a shot of “the location” without giving all the details and post it on Facebook @ Mason County Rocks.
Mason’s Clint Lane competed in Saturday’s San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo’s Youth Shoot, and finished 3rd in Whiz Bang and 8th Overall. Whiz Bang is a 5 position event with 6 different clay bird presentations, one of the most challenging events in the competition. Clint had a challenging day in the Sporting Clays competition, his best discipline, when one of his contacts fell out on the second of 12 stations.

Tish Hinojosa, once considered Austin music royalty, will perform August 18 at the Odeon theatre in Mason. After spending nearly a decade in Germany, Tish Hinojosa returns to the spotlight with new album, inspiration. Hinojosa’s latest album “West,” which releases June 15, marks something of a rebirth for the noted artist who has more than a dozen albums in her discography spanning about three decades.
“Boss” Lion Marty Bentson gaveled to order the weekly meeting of the Mason Lions Club on July 31. Lion Dale Henry was the program director, and he introduced guest Barry Kniffen to introduce the guest speaker. Barry Kniffen has a long association with tennis, and Mason has such an enthusiasm for tennis that it is worthwhile to give a short background for Barry. Barry coached tennis at Class 5A Robert E.
The hot and dry weather continues, even if occasionally we have a brief shower, and our area is under a growing threat of significant drought. The County has enacted a burn ban, and now the City is moving into a Mandatory Water Conservation stage in our water usages. There is another article in this paper about the restrictions, and I have talked about this for the past few weeks in my column, but if you leave water sprinklers on during the middle of the day do not be surprised if a City empl ...
I do not do social media. I do know however about “followers”, “likes”, and “friends”. I can blame my age, my eyes or even my brain for not being able to even master the keyboard these days. I am NOT tech savvy. I should have me a T-shirt made that had this printed on it, but since this is a small community, word travels faster than a T-shirt. I guess coming from the “old school”, I have to get over :”followers” being seen as Elvis fan type “followers”…”likes” ...
Five Mason County 4H members took a week of their summer to learn all about the agriculture industry. Youth Agricultural Lifetime Leadership (YALL) gathered nearly 40 students from across the hill country to tour south Texas. Students from Mason were Garrett Bragewitz, Lucas Martin, Steeley Smith, Alex Cope and John Benefield. This year’s tour traveled to the Texas towns of Gonzales, Victoria, Sinton, Corpus Christi, Kingsville, Raymondville, Harlingen, Mercedes, Weslaco and McAllen.
Oak wilt, one of the most destructive tree diseases in the United States, is killing oak trees in central Texas at epidemic proportions. Oak wilt is an infectious disease caused by the fungus Ceratocystis fagacearum, which invades and disables the water-conducting system in susceptible trees. All oaks are susceptible to oak wilt to some degree, but some species are affected more than others.
