“Boss” Lion Jim Heidelberg gaveled the weekly meeting of the Mason Lions Club to order on August 29. Thirty members, including our newest member, were present. Lion Lyle Johansen introduced our new member, Lion Justice of the Peace J. Treg Hudson. In addition, one guest attended the meeting.
“Boss” Jim reminded the members of the upcoming “hamburger cook” at the Mason Invitational Cross-Country Meet on September 6.
I have been very pleased to see the recent letters to the editor emphasizing the importance of Recycling in our community. City Commissioner Bonnie Beam has made an effort to encourage our community to recycle and last week’s letter from Jan Appleby points out the importance of recycling whenever we have events and gatherings in our town.
Late last week, as storm clouds brewed over the Gulf of Mexico, another storm was brewing on the north side of the square at the Mason Square Museum.
A caller notified the News that the Museum had removed a portrait of General Robert E. Lee. The News was further told that many of the volunteer docents were choosing to end their service at the facility in response to the move.

The Mason County Livestock & Wildlife Protection Association held a drawing for a Savage Predator Model Rifle. This is an annual drawing provided as an incentive to all residents to pay their association dues. The winner of the rifle drawing this year is Randy Baker. Mr. Baker represents the Heart of the Heart Whitetail Ranch in Fredonia.
From the wishes and tremendous generosity of the late Geneva Keller, a Mason native, The Mason ISD Scholarship Foundation has been created. Mrs. Keller desired the funds from the sale of her ranch land in Mason County, which was left to the foundation upon her passing, to be used for higher education for the students of Mason.
The Mason ISD Scholarship Foundation is a 501(c)(3) set up to manage the gift.
Micah Walker, County Extension Agent for Agriculture and Natural Resources has put together a year-long suggested program for lawn care. “Given the high interest in lawn care, I thought it would be appropriate to put out a general protocol for managing lawns in Mason County”, said Micah. This program may be adjusted from year to year based on the given weather and individual needs of each land owner.

The weekend of August 19, a severe surface wind struck the Center and completely ripped the southwest corner of the metal roofing off the building, removing approx. 600 sq. ft. of the metal roof and pulling many of the lath boards to which the roof was attached.
