The nomination of Scott Pruitt as administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is encouraging news for Mason County farmers and ranchers threatened by the agency’s regulatory overreach, according to Shannon Worrell, the president of the Mason County Farm Bureau.
President-elect Donald Trump selected Pruitt, the Oklahoma attorney general, to head the federal agency.
When Eli Smith served in the US Army back in 2001-2003, he was stationed in South Korea. By his own admission, the posting was far less stressful and trying than what veterans would experience in the years immediately following the 9/11 attacks.
Since that time, he's watched friends that he made during his time in service facing increasingly severe challenges.
High school students in the Central Texas Electric Cooperative service area can now submit an essay to be one of three winners for the 2017 Government-in-Action Youth Tour, an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., June 7–16.

The Mason Lions Club met Tuesday, January 3rd, for it’s quarterly business meeting. There were 26 members and 1 visitor in attendance, Landyn Smith, daughter of Chase Smith.
Treasurer Gayland Thorn presented the treasurers report. There were no questions or corrections. Secretary Will Lehmberg read the minutes from the previous meeting of the board of directors.
The flu season has begun, and strep throat and colds seem to be making the rounds. To help prevent the spread of such illnesses, please don’t come to the library if you are ill. If you do come, and you’re coughing, sneezing, etc., or your throat is sore, please wear a mask (we have some if you don’t).
Off to the races
The guy in front of me, in car #27, kept cutting me off. I’d catch up to him going into a turn, but before I could get a tire ahead, giving me the right-of-way, he would cut in on me, causing me to have to brake and lose too much speed to get around him.
What we had this past weekend was not a “cold snap.” It was a COLD GROWL! Nor was it a “three dog night.” More like a Five Dog Day and Night! But, we made it through. Some must have suffered from Cabin Fever! Some of us adjusted to staying indoors without having to produce an excuse.

Most folks in the thicket were surprised to learn that an “uppity lady from up north” had become owner of the crossroads general store on New Year’s Day.
Finding her name--Sadie Ladarovich--tough to pronounce, my Uncle Mort slapped a nickname on her that’ll likely stick. “Sadie the Lady” from the outset, she announced several changes for the store.
Patrons applauded her daily breakfast specials.
