So often, I see postings online, or in articles and pieces submitted to me, that express a yearning to return to the "good old days." Most people aren't specific when they put forward that dream... It seems that all days prior to our own must qualify as "the good old days."    As I've been putting together our annual Hunting Guide (coming out in next week's paper), I was looking at the historical article we have this year, and didn't always see that all olden days were qu ...
Hallow.    Eve.    Hollow.    Weave.    Holler.    Fever.    Witch’s cleaver.    Gloomy ghoul.    Ghostly gal.    Spider web.    Web-foot giant.    Skeleton.    Hairy monster.    Skull and bones.    Scary mobster.    Dragon fire.    Dinosaur.    Big-tooth rat.    Sneaky snake.    Sword swallow ...
It has been a great week. We had good weather, a few drops of rain, good football game, and a good trip to see our grandson.     For your calendar: Church workday at the Art United Methodist Church on Saturday, October 29th, from 9 to 12, with lunch provided; Church congregational pictures on Sunday, October 30th, at 10:55; and Church Charge Conference on Sunday, November 6th.     Best of all, I just realized that Daylight Savings time ENDS on Sunday, November ...
Words Can Hurt Us...     The old adage first appeared in an American publication in 1862. Generally, we have gone along with the declaration that sticks and stones can be “bone-breakers.” That words are skating by without harmful effects, however, hasn’t been true for decades--maybe never. When they first saw the light of day, words weren’t assaulting us so often and in so many ways as they are currently.     Yep, words--in add ...
Sometimes I just don’t have any perspiration (Aspiration)! This seems to be one of those times. The networks on television don’t have any, either. They're all reruns! If you want to get your blood pressure up, you can watch the news channels. When you're at the bottom of the channels, go back to the cooking network and get hungry!
King of the Crag     “Falling.”     That’s what rock climbers say, when they’re falling. Which sounds perfectly logical, of course. If you start to fall from the face of a cliff you’re trying to climb, it wouldn’t make any sense to shout, “Omaha!” or “AAAAHHHH!” Those code words have their place, I’m sure, but they aren’t useful for rock climbers, as a rule.
Mason knows how to celebrate Halloween. From a soiree to an artfest and more, folks have a lot of terrorific choices. But don’t miss the library’s goings-on! Thursday, John L. Davis’s presentation on vampires is sure to be creepily informing and fun, and Miss Shay and Mr. Bones will entertain with Halloween stories at the Seaquist House on Saturday from 11:00-12:00.
Decorating     Dear Gerry,     "Thanks for the Memories" sung by the late Bob Hope at the end of his shows, goes to Debbie and her mother, the late Marian Hey Ellison, for the Fantasyland yard display before and on Oct. 31 - Halloween!! Besides the "spooky" yard, those two made 300 to 400 gift bags to hand out to the eager little "trick or treaters"
Tonight's the Night - Don't Miss This Debate!    It's politics! And, I go out of my way every four years to keep the political infighting out of the pages of this paper so that neighbors and family members can stay on good terms. Of course, facebook has usurped the chance to keep people from demeaning each other, so I may be fighting a losing battle.    But, there's a big difference between talking about politics and providing an endorsement of ...
Healthcare    Dear Editor:    I am glad that I am an American with access to excellent healthcare. That being said, I am concerned about America’s healthcare insurance problems. It may be better than it was, but the fact is there are still too many problems that need to be addressed that affect me personally.    I don’t think that I am special, so I think these things may affect many other average Americans.
