Hops, Skips and Slithers....    In these turbulent days when much of the news is awash with controversy that rages beyond ugly, my commentary remains blissfully gentle. Cover up my name, and some readers might think Miss Manners writes it.    Still, some folks may race to Wikipedia to verify my assertion that no other county in Texas--or maybe even the nation--can match Nolan County in “round-ups.” For almost six decades, they’ve annually ...
I’ve become a Facebook junie! Love the dog posts the most. The funnies bring a chuckle to my day. And the stupidity of folks gets my hackles up. It keeps me informed on friends and family. Some of my friends I’ve not seen since forever, but I still count them as friends.    Of course, I could be doing other things!
You get what you pay for    When the Endangered Species Act was passed in 1973 it was, overall, a Good Thing. It all started with the bald eagle, our national bird, which was going south because lousy people were shooting them. You have to be a real jerk to shoot a bald eagle but, unfortunately, some people are real jerks.
We’re up to bat, folks! Tomorrow is painting day! Please join us for Vickie McMillan’s slide show and lecture at 9:00 and stay a little while to put your brush strokes on the community painting. No admission fee for the presentation and no artistic ability required to paint! If you can’t make the morning shifts at 10:15 and 11:15, the afternoon shifts run from 1:30-6:00, with a repeat of the presentation at 6:30.
Beer-based Pizza Crust    Courtesy Delish.com and Mark Bello    In my on-going quest for the “perfect” pizza crust, I’ve tried a lot of recipes. I want the finished product to be thin, crispy and tasty. Up until this recipe, I have made dozens of crusts that meet at least two of the three requirements, but none of them have gotten it all right!
The Truth    Has Christianity Been Sidetracked?    Dear Gerry,    I’m sorry to sound depressing, but I’m beginning to think that a lot of people who call themselves Christians might misunderstand what it takes. I have an idea as to the seeds of this misunderstanding. You tell me. About 180 a.d. Theophilus of Antioch wrote a credal statement, the first known “creed.” It affirmed the Antioch church’s belief in one God “who te ...
The Details of Our Daily Lives!    Last weekend, I spent time resolving a lingering problem with a clogged washing machine drain. It seems that 40 years of slowly accumulating soap, grease, fiber and food residue had finally taken its toll and every wash of laundry ended with the flooding of the utility room.    On Sunday evening, I was watching television, and I realized that, among all the other things that are pure fantasy in such shows, the ...
Price of EMS    Dear Gerry,    Last Tuesday the Mason County EMS transported me to the hospital. I would like to report on that experience.    They got here to the ranch fast!    They were professional and efficient!    They were kind and thoughtful    Mason County is very fortunate to have such good emergency service.    If Judge Bearden and the Commissioners’ court want to raise taxes for the ...
Oh, I hope you take time out to join us in creating a unique painting symbolizing the culture, heritage, and beauty of Mason! World-renowned artist Vickie McMillan will be here on Thursday, September 8th, to guide participants in their painting. She’ll also be giving a slide-presentation twice during the day and will be discussing her trips to Africa and her work, how art is vital to global wildlife conservation, color theory, and how to make photographs dramatic.
Bear Right    Running is bad for your health. I’ve been saying that for years but, for some reason, people don’t listen to me. You still hear about people going out and running, and bad things happen to these people. I mean besides getting real tired. Well, I’ll bet Karen Williams will pay more attention to my column in the future.    Karen was running in the Valles Caldera Marathon in New Mexico recently, and was less than three miles fro ...
