Fifty Years and Counting...
A few friends from 50 years ago still remember our wedding day--August 12, 1966. The occasion is a conversation starter when we gather.
Brenda and I smile, our memories quickly rekindled by unlikely occurrences at the ceremony.
Friends and kin remember it for obvious reasons. It rained hard in Alpine, TX, that day.

As our taxi/van was pulling out of our hotel, the driver stopped and picked up another guy, who was standing in the road. They were obviously friends, since the new guy calmly opened the door and got in the front seat, and the two started talking. Well, maybe talking is too weak a word.

Watering Restrictions
Mayor Hinckley, in his City Corner column, regularly reminds us to be mindful of how we do landscape watering.
In his column of July 27, he advised that the City’s water system is struggling to keep up with demand. He stated that the City is establishing mandatory water restrictions during the hot dry weather we’re experiencing.
Happy August. In a few days August will arrive. School will start. Fall is just around the corner.
There is progress on the handicapped ramp at the Art United Methodists Church. Dirt is moved. Forms are up. It won’t be long until it is finished.
This is the week of non-announcements.
Avoiding Misinformation.... Sign Off for a While!
When I get up in the mornings, I like to check my email, then the weather report. I follow that up with a scan of news headlines to find out what has gone on while I was sleeping. If something catches my interest, I do additional reading.
When that's done, I go over to Facebook.
Dead wood.
It’s a good thing.
Makes for good barbecue.
Like Texas Deadwood.
Now there’s an appropriate name.
Or Coopers BBQ.
Friends of mine cut down a dead tree.
Why not.
They’re in the way.
Unsightly.
No longer wanted.
Useless.
On the other hand...
Dead wood means life.
When it piles up, birds find solace within.

During Monday night's City Commission meeting, proceedings came to virtual halt when newly elected Commission Sue Pledger raised questions about nepotism in the hiring of Blue Oak Engineering by the City as its primary engineering service. Blue Oak is owned by Mayor Brent Hinckley's son, Daniel.
During discussions that ensued, Mayor Hinckley addressed those charges and pointed out that both the City Attorney and ...
Looking for Differences, Ignoring the Similarities....
I saw a great photo on Facebook the other day. A bear sits at a picnic table holding a knife and fork in its paws. The caption says: "White, black, man, woman, straight, gay, Catholic, Muslim, American, Mexican.... all taste like chicken!"
If an alien spacecraft were to land on Earth, they would notice some marked differences in the life forms that are here.
Mother Nature.
What a gal.
What a wonderful world she gave us to live in.
Just look up at the sky some dark night.
Who would’ve guessed what Mira is up to...up there.
Mira being a star.
Not a movie star.
Nope.
There’s no comparison to movie stars when it comes to the red giant Mira.
Astronomers in the 17th Century called her “a wonderful star whose
brightness could change dramatically in the course of about 11 months.”
Ah, the fickle world of fame.
Modern astronomers now recognize an en ...
