What Were You Thinking? Don't Be Stupid! On Saturday night, a group of campers set up their tents and sleeping bags on the island where the Llano and James Rivers join. During the night, heavy rains, far upstream in the James River watershed, raised floodwaters that began covering the island. There were 12 people out on the island, and rescue units from Mason and Loyal Valley responded quickly to the situation.
Professional Service NOTE: One of the most dangerous jobs in this country is an electrical Lineman. In the past letters to the editor I have made jest of the City of Mason’s electrical department. I must now eat my words as they were without real substance. Today, Sunday the 29th of May I found myself without power due to a direct hit of lightning on my transformer.
Showstopper! At the Odeon Theater. On the west side of the square. Come one. Come all. No purchase required. Just drive by and look. You can’t miss it. She’s all gussied up. Nuevos colores. Muy bonita. Architectural eye candy. Thanks to RPM Painting Plus. (Aka Rollie Morgan.) Sure does liven things up. That, and Lea Lou Co-Op on the opposite side of the square. Nothing like a new paint job. New business. New energy. And all around town too. Houses being remodeled. Restored. Redone. Repainte ...
This has been another great week at Art, Texas, USA. The leaves are almost under control at my house. Our kids and grandkids spent Sunday with us. We had to use the wipers on the way to church this morning. Life is good. The Ministerial Alliance will hold a Fifth Sunday Service at First Baptist Church on Sunday, May 29th, at 6 pm.
Chilies Rellenos Casserole This is a great recipe when you have company coming. You can make this ahead time. I think you could even freeze it. Its one my favorite recipes my sister makes. Serve it with a side salad (I like to serve it with a guacamole salad) and some tortillas and you’ll have a complete meal. 1 lb.
Angels Among Us... I clearly remember Christmas Day in 1967, when Paul Crume--in his popular daily column featured for three decades in the Dallas Morning News--professed his belief in angels. Oh, he acknowledged demons, too, but this day he wrote of angels. It was a heart-warmer, and his column was applauded so widely by Christians, the newspaper has run it each Christmas Day since.
This seems to be a busy time of the year, especially for those who have kids in school. This brings to mind the old saying, “That’s why God gave children to the young,” because in some cases, some older folks aren’t as tolerant! These are more likely Grumpy Old Men, rather than Grumpy Old Women. I often see a mother with three or more children that are all moving in different directions and think, I used to do that!
Death by do-gooder Some of you may recall that, about a year ago, my son, Leret, and I made a trip up north to visit Yellowstone National Park And Stupid People Destination. They had to change the name due to national Truth in Advertising laws. The new name narrowly edged out runner-up: Yellowstone National ‘That Road Is Closed’ Park.
We’re gearing up for Summer Reading, which begins on June 1 at 1:00 P.M., and I’m really excited about our special programs. On Thursday, June 9th, John R. Erickson, author of the Hank the Cowdog series, will entertain us! The program begins at 6:00 P.M. and is suitable for adults as well as children, so all you fans, mark your calendars!!
The Bridges of Mason County A few weeks ago, representatives from the Texas Department of Transportation were at the Mason County Library to answer questions about upcoming road and bridge projects. The two folks manning the displays in the Stribling Room were helpful and had lots of great information to share. The displays and handouts showed projects throughout the Austin District, of which Mason County is part.
