An Implosion That Fizzled… Gawkers gathered to gaze at a gigantic “goof” of an implosion attempt gone bad. Thus was the origin of the “leaning tower of Dallas.” The demolition company’s failed effort to take down an 11-story office tower could make Lloyd D. Nabors Demolition shift gears into construction rather than destruction.
Easy Shepherds’ Pie I thought since we are approaching St. Patrick’s Day I would do an Irish dish. Shepherd’s Pie always makes me think of Ireland. It’s a hearty dish with origins in the England and Ireland composed of a ground meat cooked in gravy, onions, carrots, celery, and a mashed potato crust (can be top and bottom, or just top). The term “cottage pie” was used by 1791.
This week brings Spring Break and Daylight Savings Time. Grandparents are really tired with these two events happening together. We are enjoying grandchildren. We are also tired because we are out of our usual routine. Today’s Lenten Lunch is at First United Methodist Church. Next week, the Lenten Lunch will be at River of Life. A Work Day for Easter is planned at the Art United Methodist Church on March 28, from 9 to noon. The Mission Committee of the Art United Methodist Church remi ...
Does Wednesday Morning Change Things? I looked back through my many years of columns and some of the topics I've addressed. Several times over the years, I've addressed what happens the day after an election cycle ends. In most cases, those have been national elections, as Mason County residents can be quite involved in selecting their elected leaders.
At first, the change of season is almost imperceivable. The slant of the sun’s light and the feel of the air is slightly different. A new cast of migratory birds begins to appear in the landscape. This is where we might be now as the world economy transitions to a no-carbon future.
St. Murphy's Commandments for Preachers Inspired by MURPHY GOES TO CHURCH, a book by Steve Dennie and Rob Suggs (InterVarsity Press, 1993) wherein they share some "laws" in the church that are akin to Murphy's Law, "If anything can go wrong, it will." I have done some further research on my own and discovered even more such laws, rules, principles, theorems, etc. I call them "St.

And the Horse Spring Rides In On… The season of spring--God bless it--wears many faces. It has inspired poets to greatness, encouraged the downhearted, confounded meteorologists and induced weeping by throngs of spouses who don’t care for yard work. I am one of those, ashamed that I’m far south of my wife’s expectations, rarely carrying “my part of the mulch.” Spring can enter quietly, like Carl Sandburg’s description of fog tippy-toeing on “little cat feet,” or comparab ...
Tamale Loaf I found this recipe in the San Angelo Standard Times from 1963. It was submitted to the “Angelo Woman’s Concho Cookery Cooking contest”. My mother never threw anything away, especially recipes. (Gee, I wondered where I got that from.) I hope you enjoy this dish. It is a different “twist” on meat loaf.
