The Sept. 11 meeting of the Blanco City Council was called to order by Mayor Herden, who reported that the work being done along U.S. Hwy 281 is being done by TxDOT with no expense to the city and that it is not part of the Safe Sidewalks to School program scheduled to start next month.
Rainy Day Fund Eyed In preparation for the upcoming legislative session scheduled to begin in January, the Senate Finance Committee in a Sept. 11 hearing considered state spending and costs related to the 2017 Hurricane Harvey disaster. Public education in Texas is funded primarily with local property taxes, so when property values in a district decrease, so does the money available for public schools there.
The Blanco County Sheriff’s Office received 327 calls for service from 9/03/2018 through 9/09/2018. The Blanco County Communications Center received the following call types during the seven-day period: 7 = Arrests 158 = Traffic Stops 5 = Reckless Drivers 30 = Medical Aid Calls/Medical Alarm 26 = 911 Hang up Calls, Mis-dials, Open line or Abuse calls 2 = Fire Calls/Fire Alarms 8 = Motor Vehicle Accidents 4 = Disturbance Calls 7 = Animal Complaints/Loose Live Stock Calls ...
Last week, I was asked to join a panel discussion on this topic at the Texas Water Research Network, sponsored by the Cynthia and George Mitchell Family Foundation and the City of Austin. Our panel included representatives from our neighbors in New Braunfels and the Regional Water Authority for the cities of Kyle, San Marcos and Buda. Judge Brett Bray called the meeting to order at 9:04 a.m. Commissioners present included Tommy Weir, Chris Liesmann, and Paul Granberg. After reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, Judge Bray requested a moment of silence to honor the victims of the 9/11 attacks. Weir motioned to approve the minutes from the August meetings and Granberg seconded.
When we want something to eat, our available choices are many. We can pick one of a long list of restaurants and other prepared-food places, or we can go to the grocery store and chose from an unimaginable assortment of things to eat. Furthermore, most of these choices are available to us 365 days a year.
In the 1850s as settlers located in what is now Blanco County, they were delighted to find the land of a mid-grass prairie. This land was dominated by side-oats grama, wildrye and little bluestem, with a mixture of shortgrass prairies in dry sites and tallgrass in wetter sites. Who can purchase flood insurance: Anybody can purchase a flood policy on a residential structure, non-residential structure or condominium structure located in a community that participates in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Both homeowner’s AND renters may also purchase flood insurance for your contents. Note: If your mortgage company requires flood insurance, be sure and inquire with your agent as to whether the coverage you purchased also covers contents!
Irises are amongst some of the most familiar and loved old-fashioned perennial plants. They are often referred to as the poor man’s orchid. Irises are available in almost every color and come in various sizes and types. Bearded Irises are often most well-known, but there are other types including German, Siberian, Japanese and Louisiana.
On Sept. 18, Blanco State Park received around 1,600 nine-inch catfish from the San Marcos inland fishery. Did you know that a fishing license is not required to fish within the boundaries of a state park? So, come on out and try your hand at catching some fish. We have some fishing poles that you can check out from our Park Headquarters as well.
The board of trustees of BISD met Monday, Sept. 10, 2018, and all members were present with the exception of Scott Edwards. BES principal Jowie Walker presented the Principal’s Award medal to fifth-grader Preslee Faris for her contributions to the school. Faris escorted new kindergarten and pre-K students to class the first day of school, and continues to ask administration what she can do to help. BHS principal Keitha St.
Sixth and seventh grade boys and their parents or caregivers are invited to “Guy Talk,” a free interactive presentation about growing up a man on Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 6 p.m. at the Fredericksburg Middle School cafeteria (110 W. Travis St.). Dr. Michael Speck of the Hill Country Memorial Medical Group and Dr.
The Blanco junior varsity football team played at Marion on Thursday, Sept. 13. The defensive battle ended in a 0-0 tie. Blanco moved the ball well in the first half, but couldn’t get much offense going in the second half. Some untimely penalties stopped drives. Marion moved the ball inside the 20-yard line several times, but the Panthers were able to stop the Bulldogs on downs or turnovers. The junior varsity plays a home game against Randolph on Thursday, Sept.
The Blanco Panther football team hosted the Bulldogs from Marion Friday night, Sept. 14, in what would prove to be a tough battle on a soggy and rainy night. The Panthers lost 29-22, but fought through all four quarters, and even to the final seconds of the game. Quarterback Baylor Smith threw for 65 yards, rushed for another 63 yards and scored two rushing touchdowns.

The clash of the Lady Panthers and the state ranked Johnson City Lady Eagles on Friday, Sept. 14 was just as anticipated….a nail-biter. The points were hard-fought. The Panthers were victorious on this night with a match score 3-1. Set scores were 25-22, 21-25, 26-24, and 25-22. The Eagles were ranked fifth in conference 3A on the Texas Girl’s Coaches Association 2018 Top 25 volleyball poll as of Tuesday, Sept 11.
Kendelle John won the game ball at Friday night's football game.  Accompanying Kendelle are Lions John Jones and Sam Sevier. The Lions Club sells tickets on the game ball at each home game. All the proceeds from the ticket sales go toward college scholarships.
Tractor Supply Company will celebrate its grand opening in Blanco with a community-wide celebration featuring entertainment, giveaways and special events. As part of the family-friendly celebration from Thursday, Sept. 27 through Sunday, Sept. 30, Tractor Supply customers will receive a 10 percent discount on all purchases made at the store on top of already discounted prices.
Twin Sisters Dance Hall will hold its fourth annual “Raise the Roof” fundraiser from 9 a.m. to midnight on Sept. 22, 2018. Funds raised from the event will benefit the continued restoration and preservation of the historic hall. “We started the Raise the Roof fundraiser originally to raise money for a new roof,” Jo Nell Haas, Twin Sisters director said.
The city’s Arts in the Park committee announces a change in entertainers for the Sunday, Sept. 30 concert at 3 p.m. in Bindseil Park. Because of a medical emergency, Bryan Anders and his band had to cancel their performance. In his place, country-western artist, Tracie Lynn and her band will play.

Local author Eddy Rogers recently published his third novel, The Gold Coin. This short novel is a sequel to his first novel, The Lucky Strike. His second novel was a prequel, based in Houston. Copies of The Gold Coin, autographed by the author, can be purchased at the Old Blanco County Courthouse for $10.

“I hope you didn’t take it personally, Preacher,” an embarrassed woman said after a church service, “when my husband walked out during your sermon. It wasn’t out of any disrespect to you,” insisted the woman, “Fred has been walking in his sleep ever since he was a child.” Many attend a religious service every week, but some unfortunately seem to have it scheduled as regular nap time.

Have you ever laughed so hard you thought you might bust a gut? As it turns out, it’s usually not laughter that causes it. And, honestly, it’s not truly funny when it does happen. A busted gut is more correctly termed “hernia.” It happens when an anatomical part protrudes through an opening where it shouldn’t be.
While serving as a young missionary in South America, My companion and I were assigned to visit fellow missionaries working in a small Uruguayan town. We disembarked at the town plaza. We had no address for the missionaries and were speculating about how best to locate them. The answer came from an unexpected source. It is customary for a Catholic cathedral to be located prominently on one side of the central square.
