The Parkers had come to Texas from back east somewhere to live on a parcel of desert land near Van Horn. They had purchased the property sight unseen and were probably disappointed when they discovered how barren it was. The only water available to them was from a stock tank on a neighbor’s ranch.

A young man said to his grandmother that he had received no inspiration or derived any benefit from the Bible although he had “gone through it several times.” Perhaps, answered his grandmother, “you should let it go through you once, then you will tell a different story!” “Beloved, while I was making every effort to write you about our common salvation, I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all handed down to the ...
Continuing his theme of putting off the old and putting on the new from verse 22, we will look at these final words in chapter four of Ephesians – beginning with verses 31-32, we will end with verse 30. Eph 4:31 “Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamor, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:” We are to “put away” all bitterness (harshness, deep-seated resentment), wrath (rage, violent outbreaks), anger (internalized hostility), clamor (out-crying, s ...
Mondays were wash days when I was growing up. Mom had an old wringer washing machine in the basement where she would spend an entire morning washing clothes and putting each item through the wringer. She had to be careful to avoid popping the buttons off the shirts when she put them through those rollers.
Many people believe in Jesus Christ, but some people believe He has not come yet. In Mark 16:16-18 “16He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.
When Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ford celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, a reporter asked them, “To what do you attribute your fifty years of successful married life?” “The formula,” said Mr. Ford, “is the same formula I have always used in making cars—just stick to one model.” When it comes to a perfect model for our life, Christ stands alone, but there are many types in the Old Testament of the Christ, and while they fall short of the one they picture, nevertheless there ar ...
When I was in college I found a verse in the Bible that I really liked, Proverbs 27:17, “Iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” I think I liked it because I thought it meant that God was going to use me to sharpen other people. In time I discovered that it more accurately described God’s usage of family, friends and neighbors to sharpen me and shape my character.
It was time to plan for graduation. I was in my first year as principal at Socorro High School in El Paso and I felt the need to recognize certain outstanding students; students who might not be in the top ten academically but who stood out as being special in other ways.
During Mission to Georgia
The youth of Blanco’s First Baptist Church set out on an adventure to Camp on a mission trip to Georgia that brought many positive experiences for both the teenagers and the lives they touched. Their trip began with a comedy of errors as three vans that should have arrived to take them on their journey were not available.
The phrase “a cross to bear” is a popular derivation of the words of Jesus: “Take up your cross and follow me.” While the phrase is commonly understood to mean acceptance of some burdensome task, the command to take up the cross is much more than a symbol of the difficulties experienced by humanity.
