The Blanco Good Samaritan Center’s thrift store will now be open two days a week. The center announced last week that its thrift store will now be open Tuesdays and Thursdays. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays and noon to 6 p.m. on Thursdays. Donations will still be accepted only on Thursdays, from noon to 5 p.m.
Light Night was the place to be on Halloween night, and COVID-19 did not keep guests away from the fun. The weather was a perfect fall evening, and approximately 900 to 1,000 guests attended the annual event, hosted by First Baptist Church in Blanco. There were costume contests, game booths, hay rides, buggy rides, and plenty of food and candy on hand for everyone who attended the free event. Blanco Ballet participated in a National Cecchetti Exam session on Saturday, Oct. 31. Ballerinas take exams to pass on to the next level of their ballet studies. Three ballerinas completed their fourth student level and will now be studying the first professional level, Elementary or Level 5. These dancers are Sidney Johnson, Madison Fenley and Analucia Oyler.
A new look and gateway monument signage could be on the way for Blanco. This signage will enhance the appearance of city’s historic downtown buildings of Blanco and be an inviting element upon entering the city into the historic square. This native rock monument and supplemental landscaping will enhance the appearance of Blanco and will be inviting, upon entering the city.
For almost half a century, a Blanco woman made it her mission to help local nursing home residents, including many of the county’s elderly population. Sophie Johnson retired on June 30 after first working as an administrator at Live Oak Medical in Blanco, which closed in 2017, and then at LBJ Medical Center in Johnson City.
Judge Brett Bray called the special Blanco County Commissioners Court meeting to order at 9 a.m. Tuesday with all four commissioners present. The meeting was simulcast live on the Blanco County YouTube channel, but citizens had to be present at the courthouse to provide public comments. After the pledge, public comments were heard.
It’s that time of the year again, Red Ribbon week! The Red Ribbon Campaign is an alcohol, tobacco, and other drug and violence prevention awareness campaign observed each year Oct. 23-31 and is currently the largest drug-abuse prevention campaign in the nation. On Oct. 20, the Texas Joint Counterdrug Task hosted a “Be Drug Free” event on the Blanco Elementary School playground.
There are 28 active COVID-19 cases in Blanco County as of Friday, the county’s office of emergency management announced late last week. The total is one fewer than announced Oct. 5, the last time the BCOEM released official totals. This time they have been broken down into 20 active confirmed cases and eight active probable cases.
The Coalition on Awareness, Prevention, and Treatment of Substance Abuse (CoAPT) monthly meeting was called to order Oct. 21 at 9 a.m. by Amber Corder, program coordinator. Introductions were made first. Corder provided an update on the vape detectors and explained that the coalition has already purchased six detectors for the high school bathrooms.
Fourteen members of Boy Scout and Cub Scout Troops 497 of Blanco help dedicate the new flagpole at American Legion Post 352 on Monday, Oct. 19. The flagpole, donated last year as surplus to the American Legion by Blanco’s Gem of the Hills Community Center, now proudly flies Old Glory as well as the POW/MIA flag, commemorating American Prisoners of War and service personnel who are Missing in Action.
