Just in time for the start of high school football season, sports aficionados soon will be seeing a new sports editor for the Llano News around the fields. Andrew Salmi, who is from Southern California, recently made the big move from Oklahoma, where he covered sports for several newspapers. Salmi also will be the sports editor for sister papers in San Saba and Mason. He might be new to Llano, but he’s no greenhorn when it comes to sports. “My family and pretty much any of my frie ...
It might be hard to believe, but school is starting in less than a month. There’s still plenty of time to help kids who are in need of some of the basics before they hit the books. For the third year in a row, the Back to School Blast will be distributing backpacks, school supplies, and socks and shoes directly to all four Llano Independent School District schools. “Each year, we give out hundreds of pairs of shoes and socks; this past year, we gave out at least 500 pairs of shoes and ...
The next school year is just over a month away, so what will it look like? As Llano families prepare for whatever comes next, two moms expressed their concerns about their children’s return to school during a worldwide pandemic. This week, the Llano Independent School District is expected to reveal some details about how the next school year will look. Many districts across the state are modeling their plans on recommendations released on July 7 by the Texas Education Agency, which ov ...
Llanoans who tuned in on Sunday to the Animal Planet’s law enforcement TV show “Lone Star Law” were treated to some local scenery. Episode one of season eight premiered on Sunday. Gould is one of three game wardens in Llano County with the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department.
The coronavirus already has substantially changed life for Llano business owners who have been adapting to statewide mandates that can change on a dime. After the governor’s new executive order went into effect on July 3, Llano County residents now are required to wear a mask when in public spaces. The order applies to counties with at least 20 COVID-19 cases, which includes Llano County. As of July 2, the county’s health authority reported 42 cases countywide, including 9 people who ...
Two new police officers recently hit the streets of Llano after completing their police academy training, city officials announced earlier this month. Aric Steffes and John Miquel Zavala are the new officers in training. They graduated from the CAPCOG Regional Law Enforcement Academy in June and officially joined the team on July 1. Steffes and Zavala bring the department up to four patrol officers, said Llano Police Chief Mike Scoggins.
It’s not over yet. One local doctor expects the county’s COVID-19 cases to climb, following a statewide trend. “Statewide numbers are rising at a phenomenal rate,” said Llano County Health Authority Dr. Jack Franklin with Hill Country Direct Care. “I certainly expect Llano’s case count also to continue rising.” As of June 26, Llano County has had 22 people test positive for COVID-19, including 15 active cases.
After a past sand mining project near the Llano River was scrapped, one local company has started the process again in a different place on the river. Collier Materials, Inc., which has locations in Marble Falls and Llano, has entered into agreements with landowners to establish a new sand mining operation, according to one local official who spoke with the vice president of the company, Kevin Collier. “Collier has been seeking alternate options and is planning to establish a sand plant ...
For one local nonprofit, it was a long 29 days of being shut down but now the Boys & Girls Club of Llano is getting back into the swing of things. “We’re not quite back to normal because we’re still taking many COVID-19 precautions, but our first priority is the kids’ safety so we’ll stick with it as long as we need,” said Angelyn Drake, director of the Boys & Girls Club of Llano. Along with schools and childcare programs, the Club had to shut down in March because of coronavi ...
Millions of dollars are at stake. The Llano County Judge is urging residents to take the 2020 Census because of its financial impact on the county, especially the school district. More than 43 percent of Llano County households have responded, lagging behind its 2010 self-response rate of 49 percent, according to U.S.
