The Sonora Broncos welcomed the Mason Punchers on Friday night, and they were ready to give the Mason boys a night of great football.
Sonora took the opening kickoff; but, even though they didn't lose yardage, they couldn't quite push through the Puncher defense to even come close to scoring. The Punchers took over deep in their own territory; and the Broncos went toe to toe with Mason, allowing them very little yardage.

In June, I had the honor of participating in the Kakehashi Project, a youth exchange program funded by the Japanese International Cooperation Center sending four groups from across the United States to the island nation of Japan for ten days. Last week the Punchers had their second home game in a row as the Sonora Broncos came to town.
Mason started off right where they let off last week and the offense was firing on all cylinders and the defense was flying around to the ball. The Punchers jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead with the Broncos answering with a score of their own.
From there the Punchers took control of the game scoring two more times making the halftime score 19-8.
7th grade
First game jitters went out the window as the 7th grade Punchers started the season against the Sonora Broncos. It was a hard fought game that literally came down to the wire with the score being tied at 20 as the final horn blew.
Everybody played hard as we saw lots of good things out of this 7th grade bunch of boys.

This handsome home on Avenue F here in the town of Mason suggests a castle from a foreign land. The home was built in 1904 by Otto Mebus, the brother of Anna Martin. Anna Martin was a pioneer hero in the early days of Mason. Otto used a set of Victorian house plans and went about creating his dream home.
County Road
Nov 1996, my husband and I bought a beautiful piece of property at the end of Masollan Road from Raymond & Ruth Parker. We became every-other-weekend residents. Seven months after we bought the property, in June 1997, the Llano River flooded our cabin, well house, and sheds. It washed away everything between the cabin and the river: trees, fencing – even the corner posts, irrigation system, and tons of soil.
Sometimes, Just a Few Days Matter....
It would be the epitome of understatement to say that the last week has been emotional and difficult. As one close friend who has also lost both parents told me, "No matter how old you are, it sucks to be an orphan!"
But, this column is not about Daddy or the tough week I had.
O Beautiful.
O Morning Star.
O bacon frying in the pan.
And toast and butter.
And scrambled eggs.
Or bowls of milk and cereal.
Fruit and yogurt.
Granola bar.
Wake up, sleepyheads.
Yawn and stretch.
Working men with trucks and trailers.
Tools and equipment.
Livestock.
Linemen.
On the move.
Early risers.
Working women getting ready.
Feed the kids.
Throw clothes in dryer.
Load up the baby.
Hurryhurryhurry.
Nacho’s.
Rico’s.
The OPEN sign beckoning ...

Mort at 107—Fit and ‘Fitting in’…
As might be expected, my Uncle Mort thought he had heard every birthday-related joke in the book. At his 107th party a few weeks ago, he got a real birthday surprise.
They rolled out three large gifts. When he tore away the wrapping on the first one, there was a birthday cake adorned by 36 candles.

My favorite humor columnist, Dave Barry, used to mention his ‘research department,’ Judi Smith, from time to time. Judi is an actual person who actually works for Dave, evidently. I know that because once, when I sent Dave an email, I got a reply from Judi. She was very cordial when she indicated she might not contact the authorities if I would quit bothering Dave.
