Driving out to The Eckert James River Bat Cave Preserve on Sunday evening was almost like being in the middle of a fireworks display. Lightning flailed about in the sky like giant long- fingered hands trying to reach out and grab something. Rain hit in huge splats on the windshield, but I continued on out thinking that maybe the system was already past the Preserve.
The Youth Agricultural Lifetime Leadership opportunity is a 6 day exploration for youth in 4-H Districts 7,10,11 & 12 to experience South Texas agricultural production.
Youth that have a strong interest in production agriculture who are outgoing high school freshmen through outgoing seniors or ages 15—18 as of September 1, 2015 are invited to apply and 30 youth will be selected.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Auxiliary will hold their monthly meeting at the Mason Greater Works Center Tuesday nite. June 20 at 6:30 pm, which will kick off the 2017 fund raising campaign , to offer assistance for those veterans in need.

Micah Walker, Mason County Extension Agent for Ag and Natural Resources has announced the date and time for steer and heifer validation. Anyone wanting to show during the 2017-2018 stock show season will need to validate their livestock. Non-members of 4H or FFA are welcome.

Mason’s Scarlet Punchers, those intrepid women “of a certain age,” having conquered the Hill Country (April) and Llano (May) are staying in Mason for our June potluck luncheon, to be held at the home of Scarlet Puncher Brenda Koepke, on Monday, June 12th, at 11:30 AM. As part of our mission of absolutely insisting on enjoying life to the fullest, we are always glad to have a new member (Brenda) host, because we are nothing if not nosy, and this means we get to see her house!

Terri Hendrix and Lloyd Maines are coming to the Odeon Saturday June 17 and that is great. But what is nearly as great is that the Odeon Preservation Association has broken ground and has even poured the foundation for the highly anticipated and much needed addition.
The new add-on will include dressing rooms, a green room for performers, backstage restrooms, work space and storage.
VFW Post 8554 and the VFW Auxiliary Post 8554 are hosting a new member meeting on Tuesday June 20th at 6:30 PM. The meeting will be held at the Greater Works Community Development Center located at 601 Brazos St. Hot dogs cooked by the VFW and desserts made by the Auxiliary will be served.
The VFW Auxiliary is one of the nation’s oldest veteran service organizations and our members are the relatives of those who have served in overseas combat.

Mason began tournament play on June 2nd and 3rd in Burnet. Mason’s first round game was against Burnet who ended as tournament champions. Burnet jumped out to an early lead and the Punchers were not able to recover. Returning Saturday Mason showed up determined. They beat Hamilton (25-2), Brady (16-4) and Llano (10-8) for a rematch with Burnet and an opportunity to play in the championship game.
