Mason’s Scarlet Punchers, those intrepid women “of a certain age,” who absolutely insist on enjoying life to the fullest, got more than they bargained for on January’s journey to Brady. Four women who still had enough pennies in their pockets to eat out after the deluge of spending that engulfs Christmas, met at the Methodist Church parking lot and attempted, for the second time in three months, to eat at Joe’s Italian Grill.
Last week, on a cold and windy morning, the Mason County Chamber of Commerce welcomed its newest member, My Space Rentals, owned by Hunter & Koda Geistweidt and Zach and Donna Langehennig. My Space Rentals is the newest addition to Mason County and we are here to offer the best storage with the friendliest service.
RECENTLY, THE OPERATION ROUND-UP Board of Directors at Central Texas Electric Cooperative approved a grant to Bluebonnet CASA. Bluebonnet CASA provides and supports trained community volunteers to advocate for the best interest of abused and neglected children involved in the court system, and to facilitate placement of these children in safe, loving and permanent homes as quickly as possible.
Lion president Marty Bentson opened the January 22 meeting of the Mason Lions Club, and he recognized two guests, senior students from Mason High School, Cassidy Schneider and Reagan Standard. Lion Charlie Reichenau filled in as a substitute speaker to loud applause and cries of “again” when he announced that he would be speaking about his thrilling adventures while fishing in the wilds of the Amazon jungle rivers. As we begin working on the needed projects for the City this spring, there are several issues that seem to jump out in importance and urgency. There are the regular tasks such as dealing with water leaks and filling more potholes, as well as preparing the parks and public areas for the spring growing cycles.
Last April, a Mason County couple entertained visitors for a long weekend. They went rock hunting, climbed some of the granite uplifts in the north end of the county, and attempted to visit the Eckert James River Bat Cave. Though the cave is closed in April, Bat Cave Steward Vicki Ritter agreed to meet the visitors and show them around the property.
Mason County 4-H sent four teams totaling 14 members to San Angelo on Wednesday, January 23 to compete in the District 7 Food Challenge. This competition, that is a part of the 4-H Food and Nutrition Project, challenges teams to create a dish using only a predetermined set of ingredients.
As previously reported, Mason Post 8554 selected Angela Huffman, an 8th grader as winner of the local Patriots Pen essay contests; and, Colby Brown, a senior, was chose winner of the Voice of Democracy contest. We have been informed that Angela Huffman won 2nd place in State competition and is to receive a check in the amount of $500 from the Spring Branch Post # 8790 of Houston and a plaque is to be presented to her by VFW Dist.
Last Wednesday, January 29, 1,000 rainbow trout were released at the Llano River’s “James River Crossing” along Highway 2389 south of Mason. Quite a few of these trout are large enough to make the Texas Parks & Wildlife’s record book for the Llano River. This follows the release of 1,500 trout in mid-December. New Stop signs are coming to Mason! The City Commission has approved four new stop signs to be installed on Westmorland during the Commission meeting on January 20, 2020. Two signs will be installed at the intersection of Pecan and Westmorland. The other two signs will be installed at the intersection on Herman and Ave.
