Three Mason High School students--Megan Canfield, Lauren Olson, and Lizzy White-- competed at the UIL State Congressional Debate Meet on January 8-9, and one of those students, Megan Canfield, earned a bronze medal for placing third in the competition. UIL Congress is an event that is comprised of two days of debate, with students following parliamentary procedure to debate on proposed bills.
I received a Christmas card form the Governor’s family followed by an invitation to attend the Swearing In Ceremonies of Gov. Gregg Abbott and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick which was held January 15 on the portico of the North entrance of the Capitol of Texas. I called my daughter, Keeta, of Houston and she joined me for the ceremonial event which was of great benefit to me as we walked all over North Austin, as it seemed, along with about 15000 others. Head Lion, Marty Benson, after opening the January 15th meeting of the Mason Lions Club, turned the program over to Dr. Glenn Ruthven, who, introduced Head Coach of the Mason Cowgirl Basketball Team, Jeff Guice and Assistant Coaches Tiffany Ake and Denis Cano. Coach Guice discussed the Lady Puncher’s program for the year and described some of the factors accounting for their standing as 3rd in the State rankings.

With the sunshine and warmer weather during the past week, the City has had some chances to begin dealing with the spring time chores that need attention every year. Last week on Thursday and Friday we called “all hands on deck” and pulled all of the employees that were not needed for specific tasks elsewhere to help patch and repair most of the many potholes that have developed during the wet and cold winter days.
Wesley Simon, at left, won the rifle by a coin toss. Sutton Silerio, at right, and Wesley were tied with probably the lowest score in 42 years. There were a few bigger bucks with bigger scores; but, please remember that for all that enter the contest, one of the biggest rules is that you must preregister!!!! Everyone at Short Stop appreciates all who entered the contest, and sends out their congratulations to each and every one of them.
Operation Orphans, Inc. enjoyed another successful season of the “Take a Child Hunting” program. During the three hunts held during the 2018-2019 season, 148 boys harvested 183 animals. A hunt scheduled for girls in October had to be cancelled due to the extremely wet conditions throughout the hill country. During 2018 Operation Orphans, Inc.
January 9 was declared Law Enforcement Appreciation Day and the VFW of Mason honored the group with a lunch at Nacho’s Café at which, we had 17 to attend. A plaque was drawn up and presented to our Sheriff, Buster Nixon, on behalf of all the agencies to show our appreciation. Joining us in the funding was Martin and Phyllis Leatherwood, of Leatherwood Chapels and it was our distinct pleasure to show our pride and acknowledge of the efforts of our Law Enforcement.
Emanuel Martinez, a May 2018 graduate of Mason High School, was known as ‘E-man’ during his Puncher days! He enlisted in the military upon graduation. Recently, he graduated from Marine Corps MCRD, San Diego, CA. Through his 13 week “Boot Camp”, he was attached to Delta Co., Platoon # 1066.
