With the pretty weather this week we are reminded that Spring is just around the corner, but that also means that there is extra work for everyone as we prepare for the new growth and changes in the season.
Boss Lion Marty Bentson opened the February 19 meeting of the Mason Lions Club. Boss Marty announced that there would be a hamburger cook-sale on the Square on April 5.
Lion Mark Nash introduced the speaker, Dwight Williams, an internationally famous and successful firefighter. There were a number of guests who came specifically to see Dwight and hear his fascinating tales of fighting oil field fires.
At the Mason County Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet on February 21st, Charles Reichenau was honored with the prestigious Hall of Fame Award. Jan Appleby, last year's recipient, made the presentation.
This year's Business Over Ten Years was The Thing Is... Boutique. Kim Jackson with last year's winner, Bluebonnet CASA, made the presentation to owners Mary Polk and Lisa Polk.
The award for Business Under Nine Years went to Lea Lou Coop.
SAN ANGELO, TX (02/12/2019)-- The Angelo State University Agriculture Department’s student Wool Judging Team, including James Stultz of Mason, took first place and had two individuals place in the top five at the 2019 San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo Collegiate Wool Judging Contest on Feb. 9 in San Antonio.
ASU sent two four-person teams to the contest to compete against 13 other teams from Texas A&M University and Texas Tech University.

Fisherman David Wingo of San Antonio recently set a new Llano River Channel Catfish record. David’s channel cat weighed 6.3 pounds according to Mason’s Don Gray. Don is certified to weigh and measure fish for entry into Texas Parks & Wildlife’s record books. David caught the catfish on 2/4/19 using a single kernel of canned corn on a very small treble hook while trying to catch a rainbow trout at the James River Crossing.
Hill Country Memorial Receives TMF Hospital Quality Improvement Award
Fredericksburg, TX– Hill Country Memorial has received the TMF Hospital Quality Improvement Silver Award from TMF® Health Quality Institute. The TMF Hospital Quality Improvement Award program is sponsored by TMF, the Arkansas Hospital Association, Oklahoma Hospital Association, Oklahoma State Office of Rural Health, Texas Hospital Association and Texas Organization of Rural and Community Hospitals.
Boss Lion Marty Bentson opened the February 12 meeting with the program arranged by Chase Smith. The presenter was Ryan Jordan, rancher, member of the Mason School Board, and vice-president of the Mason Puncher Club.
Ryan noted that the Mason Puncher Club is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization devoted to helping sports in the Mason School District, except for tennis, which through a gentleman’s agreement is supported by the Mason Tennis Association.
This week I would like to write about something that is not specifically City business, but that is fundamental to this great hometown that is Mason. In our community there are many, many different people and organizations that give of their time and energy to contribute in a multitude of ways for the betterment of others and our town.
Last Friday, February 15, was the deadline for anyone interested in filing for a place on the May 4th ballot for a spot on the City Commission.
Incumbent Commissioner Bonnie Beam of District 2 was on the only person that filed for that seat. At some point in the future, the commission will consider calling the results of that position.
Incumbent Commissioner Vicki Enrique of District 4 filed for reelection, and she is being challenged by Robin Lee.
The City will draw names on February 2 ...
