Robin. Right there on the Courthouse lawn. Bob-bobbin along. Maybe that means early Spring. Or maybe it means nothing. Or maybe it’s like the old saying: The early bird gets the worm. Those old sayings may be old. But they’re full of common sense. Which is not so common. Just look at our politicians. A lotta brouhaha. No one makes sense. No matter which side. It’s a mad, mad, mad, mad world. Nonsense, after all, is NON-sense. In simpler times, one took he ...
Let's Drop Facebook for a Week! During the last week, I've been finding myself feeling quite disappointed in my friends and neighbors. And, all of that disappointment is derived from one source --- Facebook! I have watched rumors grow into fiery exchanges. I've seen normally civil political disagreements erupt into all out warfare.
Fiscal Concerns There is more than one homeless crisis in the USA. Fiscal Conservatives are certainly homeless on the national political stage. The 2019 budget deficit was over 1.1 trillion dollars. Unemployment is very low and the stock market is high; we should be running a surplus and paying down the debt during boom times.
Preservation Dear Editor, Having spent the last two years renovating four important historic structures now known as The Mildred Inn, I can tell you that I completely support the effort to create a fair ordinance to protect historic structures from destruction. Most of the City Commission meeting discussion on this topic was spent completely off point.
Pay Up Dear Editor, My name is Emmanuel Hinckley. I am one of Daniel Hinckley’s seven children. My father is a civil engineer and has a small engineering firm, Blue Oak Engineering. For three years, he and his company worked for the City of Mason to get a permit for a new landfill.
Blue Oak Dear Editor, In 2017, the city of Mason entered into contract with Blue Oak Engineering for design and permitting of a new landfill. The design and permitting work progressed, and was completed in March of 2019. In August 2019, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality approved the work and issued the landfill permit to the City of Mason.
Was Not! Is Not! Rumors! They seem to bug everybody -- even religious groups. The following statements should clear up some of these insidious misunderstandings going around in sacred circles. The kind of lights used on Noah's ark were not flood-lights. Atheism is not a threat to organized Bingo. The favorite hymn of worshippers at early services in churches is not "Onward Christian Folgers." The new Chief Rabbi of Northern Alaska is not named "Eskimoses." Jonah was not the first subma ...
Beautiful Burger Buns courtesy: King Arthur Flour These are, just like the title says, some really beautiful burger buns! They are easy to make, although you do have so spend some time waiting for the two rises required. They are worth the wait, and my volunteer “tasting team” assures me that they’re the best they’ve ever had. Ingredients: 1 cup lukewarm water 2 tablespoons butter, at room temperature 1 large egg 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour (King Arthur recommends their ...

A Different Drummer… I’m glad Sisters Maggie Hession and Frances Evans--who proudly beat a drum for the Texas Rangers from reserved seats 15 rows behind home plate--didn’t live to see it. The Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word were welcomed, unlike the Houston garbage can beater who has been “drummed out of the corps.” The guy with a different beat there is a link in the chain exposing the ugly underbelly of highest level cheating. Baseball’s integrity could go the way ...
