Swamped
Due to the fact that a lot of people (3) are now angry with me over my recent columns about using the anti-coagulant warfarin to thin out the wild feral hog population of Texas, we’re going to move on to something else. But before we do, I just want to go on record as saying I haven’t been trying to talk anyone into poisoning hogs.
I really enjoy the early Spring. Not too hot and not too cold. As Goldie Locks would say, “Just right!”
Happy, my son in Oklahoma, said they were in a tornado watch. He said they were showing helicopters flying near one. He said they were using cameras that zoomed in on the center.
Uncle Mort on Facebook...
The new owner of the thicket’s general store has “hit the ground running” on her promise to introduce changes, one of ‘em featuring “bait and grab.” (When dealing with clientele like my 104-year-old Uncle Mort, grabbing is easier than switching.)
Anyways, she’s got him “hooked” on the Internet’s Facebook site, and as far as he’s concerned--a shorter distance than he admits--she can delete all the other websites.
Maybe Mort is a distant relative of ...
Cavatini
This dish brings back a lot of fond memories. It is actually my sister Judy Lehmberg’s recipe but it was a favorite of many Girl Scout outings and Girl’s weekends. There’s nothing like a little Italian food to bring friends or family together, whether it’s at the river or in the dining room.
2 lbs breakfast sausage (Owens’s)
1 large bell pepper, chopped
1 large onion, chopped
1 pkg.
This has been a tough week for our community. As I write this on Sunday evening, I reflect of the death of John Jordan. He fought a tough battle with cancer. And then this evening, I learned that John’s father, Sterling Jordan, had passed away in Fredericksburg where he lived in the nursing home.
Texas redbud.
Ringing in Spring.
They’re out there.
And Spring is officially here.
If you ever plan to motor west.
Take the highway that’ll show you the best.
Take Texas State Highway 29.
A glorious one awaits you near the county line.
From there to Menard it just gets better and better.
They’re mostly on the right.
On the north side of the highway.
Wonder why that is.
You can’t miss ‘em.
Profundity of purplish-pink blooms in the midst of cedar green.
Or no green.
Wild as March hares ...
Using the Enquirer as Source Material
Over the course of the last decade, the American public has been making a trek through a new world of social media, instant access and reality shows. While our great-grandparents lived through the results of the industrial revolution, our grandparents through world wars and our parents through consumer excess, we are living through the age of information overload.
Reality shows were the beginning of the end in this brave new world.
Education
Funding for MISD Pre-K program
Last week in Austin, our state senate and house of representatives proposed legislation to DEFUND PRE-K programs across the state. Since I moved to Mason 13 years ago, I have seen continual improvement in educational achievement and professional success of our MISD graduates, many of whom benefited from our excellent Pre-K program.
March is Texas History Month, and we’re celebrating with special programming. Bright Star Theatre will present “Legends of the Lone Star State” at 6:30 p.m. next Tuesday, March 28, in the Stribling Room of the library, 410 Post Hill Street. They will be playing different people from our history in an entertaining program.
Atomic Pork
Last week’s column, about the debate over whether Texans should be allowed to poison feral hogs, hit a nerve. It seems there are a lot of folks who are intensely passionate about whether hogs should be killed, and how. And I think that’s a good thing, I just didn’t expect to stir up a hornet’s nest.
