One Hour Rosemary Focaccia Bread Courtesy: flavorthemoments.com
We really enjoy Italian food and prepare it in some form or another at least three times a month. Italian food cries out for a bread to accompany it, so, over the years, I've accumulated quite a few recipes for Italian bread. Some of it is a bit “fussy” to prepare, but this recipe is right in the Practical Baker's wheelhouse: simple, just a few ingredients, and ready to put on the table in about an hour.
Charlie’s Tales
On December 7, the Mason Lions Club met for their weekly club meeting at Nacho’s. The Lions Club welcomed as its guest Zach Nash, the son of Lion Mark Nash. Our guests are always welcome. Lion Frank Bartlett announced the arrangements for the Lions Christmas party at noon on Tuesday, December 14, at the Eckert Center. Lion Thom Canfield will provide the decorations, and Lion Paul Smith will provide the entertainment. Lion Glenn Ruthven introduced our guest speaker, Stan Whittle, Sup ...
The Chemistry of Photosynthesis and the Carbon Cycle
Don’t be alarmed by the chemical equations accompanying this column, you don’t need to understand the chemistry. But it is important that everyone understand the basics of photosynthesis and how carbon is cycled and recycled in the ecosystem. First photosynthesis. All green plants and some bacteria have a form of chlorophyll.
Our ebook provider is now officially cloudLibrary (Bibliotheca). You can download the app as well as find tutorials and troubleshooting at yourcloudlibrary.com. If you do not see a lot of titles, don’t worry, our content from Overdrive will transfer over sometime this week and we will pair with the Texas Cloud Library next week, so thousands more titles will soon arrive!
Today’s Grandchild is Tomorrow’s Grandparent
Back in my “talent” days I was on a photo shoot for Methodist Hospital in San Antonio. Portraying a grandfather recovering from a heart attack, my visiting “grandson” and I were to carry on an ad-lib conversation while the photographer went about his business. G. W. Lee, a red-headed, freckle-faced, eight-year-old charmer, was my visitor.
It is close to Christmas. My Christmas present to me this year is to get my dining room back to normal. I made a bedroom out of the dining room almost two years ago but now granddaughter and great grandson are on their own. So, I get my dining room back.
Biggest Losers
Americans everywhere should be pleased about the great news from last week, when Jussie Smollett’s attacker was finally brought to justice. Unfortunately for Jussie, he can now honestly quote from the Pogo comic strip, ‘We have met the enemy and he is us.’ Jussie wasted an awful lot of taxpayer money when he sent Chicago police on a wild noose chase to look for criminals that didn’t exist, but I’m not going to beat him up about it.
Bees and Butterflies and Blooms in Winter?
Readers: This column was originally run several years ago. I am running a revised version now, even though it is not yet even the beginning of winter, to alert everyone to be on the lookout for activity on warm days, even in the winter. Just outside our window we planted an Elbow Bush 10 or 12 years ago.
Our switch in e-book providers will happen next week on December 13. Be sure to delete Overdrive and Libby and download cloudLibrary (Bibliotheca). The app will be active for our patrons on Monday and your login information will be the same as it was for Overdrive. There is access to 14 times as many ebooks and audiobooks!
Cinnamon Swirl Bread for the Bread Machine Courtesy: AllRecipes.com
Somewhat like chocolate goodies, I've not met a cinnamon pastry that I've not liked. It's one of my many weaknesses, and the fact that you can let the bread machine do all the heavy lifting makes it even more attractive. (If you don't have a bread machine, you can always do the mixing the old fashioned way.
