Charlie’s Tales
On November 30 the Mason Lions Club met for their weekly club meeting at Nacho’s. Lion Mark Nash introduced Hal Zesch as his guest; guests are always welcome. It was the turn of Lion Charlie Reichenau to provide a speaker, and he chose himself, to the delight of the assembled pride of Lions. Lion Charlie has an abundance of stories, and they come forth like a flowing spring.
What’s a Nice God Like You Doing in a Place Like This?
Cleaning out water troughs is one of the many unsavory chores of ranching. Leaves fall. Algae grows. Livestock litter. The result is a build-up of muck on the bottom of these animal drinking containers that periodically needs to be removed. The way this muddy mire is moved, at least on the Birk ranch, is to wait until one of those times when the troughs have been drunk dry.
The countdown is on for Christmas. I am a bit behind on decorations. John had knee surgery this week and the week was sometimes very slow moving and then it was way too fast. I am home again. John is in a rehabilitation hospital and is not the happiest of people.
Gourds! This plant has been used by humans for as long as we can remember. If you need a bowl, water cup, scoop, or container, this sturdy member of the large Cucurbitaceae family has 100 genera and 1,000 species that produce a hard-shell, durable fruit. The two main characteristics of this family are having a tendril-bearing vine with both male and female blossoms borne on the same vine and producing a fruit that has an outer-shell covering (may be soft or hard), with seeds embedded in a pul ...

Most of us are fascinated by watching animal behavior, especially their interactions with their own species. It is these intra-species interactions and associations that we call, anthropomorphically, “animal societies.” To start with the basics, some animals are loners and some like to be part of a group. Some groups are small and some are huge.

It has been a chilly Thanksgiving. The up and down temperatures create a challenging fall going into the winter gardening season. The hoop house is holding its own, and the raised beds are partially covered with frost cloth and burlap. All the cold-tolerant plants, kale, collards, cabbage, and carrots are just setting tight.
I Get My Kicks on 386
Those of us of a certain generation remember a widely popular song of the past containing the catchy lyrics, “I get my kicks on Route 66.” The reference was to one of the first major cross country highways that ran from Chicago to Los Angeles. The song was a musical journey from location to location along the legendary route.
Thanksgiving was wonderful. We celebrated in shifts since not everyone was able to come at the same time. We had turkey one meal and ham the second meal. The turkey leftovers were packaged in dinners for Tina to share at the nursing home where she works. It was a win-win for all.
