Finally, a Veteran!...? When the prospect of military service popped up, I didn’t know the National Guard from a cattle guard. Generally speaking, that’s still the case, despite my having “served” in the Texas Army National Guard for nine years, not too long after muskets had been cast aside in favor of more effective firearms.
Skillet Ground Beef Stew This cooler weather is putting me in the mood for soups and stews! There is a slight difference between the two. Soups are more liquid based usually made with lighter ingredients. Stews tend to be heartier and take longer to cook, which is where the term “Stew” comes from. This is one of my favorite stews because it doesn’t take long.
Last Monday evening the City Commission met for a long meeting that covered a number of issues, and a few of them may be of interest to many in our community, so I would like to discuss a few of them. One particular discussion may affect anyone in Mason who owns or lives in one of the older historic buildings that our town is known for.
Where did October go? I feel like it was full speed ahead on October 1 and now the month is about over. Halloween is big for some people. I try to get a few bags of candy to hand out and then the battle is not to eat the candy before Halloween.
Beauty, beauty, everywhere. Autumn sees to that. Trees changing color. Leaves beginning to fall. And the sky. Clear, fresh, pure. Lucky, lucky, lucky to be alive. To see the sun rise. To notice the heron at water’s edge. Or spot a buck running through the brush. To hear cows bellow in the morning. Or an owl late at night. To smell bacon frying. Or the smoke from a neighbor’s fireplace. To yell and scream when the Punchers win. To sing a song. Or hum until B ...
Sometimes You Just Use What You Got!!!! During Monday nights City Commission meeting, much of the discussion was about obtaining the best possible information before making important decisions. The gist was that, with more information, and more examination, better decisions would result. On the surface, that makes perfect sense and is something that I think all of us can agree with, even in our own lives.
Experts Response to City Council meeting 10/21/2019 Need for a Budget Committee? Some good and valid opinions were given Monday night at the City Council meeting. Some actually pertained to the question being discussed....Do we need more than one person to create a sensible budget for our town? Some opinions did not pertain to that question. Is the City a business?
City Climate We are troubled by the “climate change” that has come over the Mason City Commission in the past 18 months. Adversarial challenges and obstructionist behaviors have eroded the once respectful and cooperative body, to the detriment of our town. The opinion and will of the citizens has been disregarded; respect and appreciation for our city workers has declined. We would like to see our leaders get off their soap boxes, throw away their personal agendas, and buckle down to ...
Kendal Hemphill Gerry, I’m surprised and disappointed in your decision to assuage the delicate sensibilities of certain local liberals by cancelling Kendal’s column. Mike Pledger
Kendal Gerald, We are very disappointed that the Mason News will not carry the Kendal Hemphil columns after the end of October. His witty reporting of strange happenings and people's odd situations was really funny. We loved to read them each week. The political satire was usually very apt with a lot of common sense included.
